Overview

Mattel meets Mark Twain in this animated musical based on the classic The Prince and the Pauper and starring the immortal blonde dress-up doll Barbie. Taking the artistic liberty of switching the main characters' gender, Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper finds Princess Anneliese and her poverty-stricken look-alike secretly switching identities. The 2004 direct-to-DVD feature film includes a total of seven original songs.

Barbie -- or at least her computer-animated manifestation -- follows up her bestselling fairy-tale trilogy with her most ambitious original production yet. This musical adaptation of Mark Twain's classic story casts the original American Idol in a dual role as Anneliese, a princess, and Erika, a poor seamstress. In addition to being identical twins, both duty-bound women yearn to be free and "live one day just for me." Royal intrigue unites their destinies, as Anneliese is kidnapped and Erika impersonates her to foil the evil Preminger (a lively Martin Short), who just can't wait to be king. Anneliese's devoted tutor, Julian, and the good King Dominick provide their respective love interests; an evil dog and a heroic cat (there's a novel twist) provide the comic relief; and the London Symphony Orchestra and the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra provide the musical score. With this impressive production, Barbie may be in line to inherit the unofficial crown of Queen Kidvid.
