Paul is a buttoned-down, straight-arrow lawyer who's wound a little too tight, while Corie is an effervescent free spirit who won't let anything disturb her romantic bliss. Aside from the five-flight climb and the hole in their skylight, the Bratters must also contend with eccentric upstairs neighbor Victor Velasco Charles Boyer, who must go through their apartment to get to his. Corie hatches a plot to get her mother Mildred Natwick together with Mr. Velasco, but the entire evening goes awry and even casts doubt on the viability of the Bratters' new marriage, as Corie tries unsuccessfully to loosen Paul up. All ends well, however, and Fonda and Redford are full of youthful appeal in this light domestic comedy.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
The combined star power of leads Robert Redford and Jane Fonda elevate Barefoot in the Park above the level of standard Neil Simon fare. The matinee idols convincingly portray a young couple in their first few weeks of marriage: Fonda is well-suited to the part of the nubile free spirit, and Redford is amiably uptight as her lawyer husband. True to form, Simon populates the newlyweds' world with meddling parents, nutty neighbors, and the obligatory swipe at marital instability. Precious little happens in the G-rated feature; the threat of a sour ending is somewhat miniscule when the plot's most pressing conflict is sex kitten Fonda's fear that her husband doesn't love her anymore because he doesn't want to copulate all day. But director Gene Saks treats the material for what it is: a sunny vehicle for two engaging personalities.

    Comedy & Chaos

Robert Redford and Jane Fonda were a delight in this movie. Robert Redford as a conservative groom and Jane Fonda as a freethinking bride, trying to adjust to married life, bring about some really laughable moments. Just imagine the fun of trying to get someone to try new things with strangers or having your home as part of the escape route to the roof of your building. This was just "wild" to say the least, yet you may enjoy the "ride" of married life with these two characters. A fun storyline and vivid characters make this an entertaining DVD.

    Beautiful Movie

Saw the movie for the first time about 15 years ago as a teen. Loved it! Jane Fonda and Robert Redford were brilliant. Buying a copy for myself so I can watch it whenever I feel down. A wonderful feel-good movie.

    WARM FUNNY FUNNY MOVIE

This is a great movie! Robert Redford and Jane Fonda are newlyweds just starting out in New York. They are great but Mildred Natwick steals the show as Jane's mother. The usual suave Charles Boyer is outstanding in a comedic role as an aging casanova wooing Mildred Natwick. Herb Edelman adds to the laughs as the telephone man. I have seen this movie many times and never tire of it.
