Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Originally conceived as a two-stage situation comedy, exploring both the home and work life of NYPD Capt. Barney Miller Hal Linden, this celebrated series took to the air as a midseason replacement on ABC in January 1975, focusing entirely on the station house. Good thing, too, for the 12th Precinct proved fertile comedic ground, as Barney Miller went on to run for 170 episodes, beginning with the 13 collected here. Linden served largely as the straight man in the ensemble, a multiethic detective squad in New York’s Greenwich Village, which ensured a steady stream of eccentric and seemingly benign criminals, suspects, and complainants. The breakout star from the show, Abe Vigoda’s Det. Phil Fish, pretty much hits his dour stride from the start in these episodes. No less charming in fans’ eyes are the various characters created by Ron Glass ambitious and dapper Det. Ron Harris, Max Gail good-natured but dimwitted Det. Stanley Wojohowicz, Jack Soo the warm and wise Det. Nick Yemana, and Gregory Sierra Det. Sgt. Chano Amenguale. Must-have moment? Episode 13: Barney’s wife, Liz Barbara Barrie, makes a citizen’s arrest of the 12-year-old boy who holds her up, at "stickpoint." The kid? Todd Bridges.

    Barney Miller is a treat!

The first season of Barney Miller is one of the best. It has engaging characters and situations. Actually a Funny show, with great acting. This was a great beginning to an excellent series.

Barney Miller, a cop show you could let your parents watch!

This series is outstanding, one of the most enjoyable ever on television!
The characters are funny, the series clean, and the situations as applicable today as the day it was created.

    Top Cop Comedy Show

This series was a great cop comedy. Taking place almost entirely in the station house, the complement of detectives provide a laugh a minute. The whole cast was great. The Brownie episode is a classic. Unfortunately that is in a later season. Now we just need to have more seasons available on DVD.
