The young protégé of one of the world's greatest superheroes has his first encounter with an old nemesis in this direct-to-video feature adapted from the popular animated series Batman Beyond. Terry McGinnis Will Friedle has taken over the crime-fighting responsibilities of Batman from aging Bruce Wayne Kevin Conroy, but while Terry has learned a great deal from Wayne, he's never heard the startling truth about Batman's final encounter with his arch-enemy, The Joker Mark Hamill. However, when The Joker returns to Gotham City as vicious as ever, Wayne decides that it's time that the new Batman learned all there is to know about the green-faced terror before he can bring the city to its knees -- especially after Bruce is attacked by his one-time rival. Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker also features the voice talents of Melissa Joan Hart and Angie Harmon. Upon its initial release, the movie sparked some controversy among Batman Beyond fans because of last-minute edits that toned down the violence level. However, it was eventually released on DVD in an uncut format.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Jason Bergenfeld
Like the popular television series and first animated movie, this feature-length adventure follows the post-Bruce Wayne Caped Crusader, young Terry McGinnis voiced by Will Friedle, an eager teenager with the same passion for vengeance that made Batman Gotham City's hero. This time around, Batman's most infamous archenemy, the Joker, returns for one last round with the Dark Knight, recruiting a gang of misfits to wreak havoc on Gotham, with his psychotic sights set on the Clown Prince of Crime's old foe: Wayne. Mark Hamill steals the show as the Joker, bringing back his gleefully insidious cackle, which remains one of the more resonant memories from Batman: The Animated Series. Unlike that series, though -- which mixed art deco, film noir, and Max Fleischer's Superman cartoons of the 1940s -- Batman Beyond owes more to the hyperkinetic action of Japanese animation, affording one of the world's most popular crime fighters an exhilarating update. Rachael Leigh Cook, Melissa Joan Hart, and Henry Rollins also make good voice appearances. The DVD features deleted scenes, audio commentary by the filmmakers, a behind-the-scenes documentary, and enough other extras to make this film a harrowing good time for fans of the television series -- and beyond!
All Movie Guide - Jeremy Wheeler
Steeped in controversy, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is about as dark and violent as family animation can get. It also happens to be the best interpretation of the character since the Batman: The Animated Series premiered in 1992. While the story does, indeed, follow the heir to the Dark Knight's throne -- Batman Beyond -- anyone who is familiar with the revamped series will know how integral Bruce Wayne is to the basic story line. With Batman Beyond: The Movie already covering the original Caped Crusader's last days on the job, Return of the Joker takes things one step further and lets viewers in on the final, climatic battle with the clown prince of crime, The Joker. Told through flashbacks, it's a brutal and nasty moment that shows once and for all why the character is undoubtedly regarded as a psychopath. Credit should go to Mark Hamill, who devilishly takes center stage as the maniacal villain once again, concocting a wicked performance that's both hilarious and downright disturbing at the same time. Thankfully, the rest of the animated film is just as tight, combining the perfect amount of drama, mystery, and full-blown bat-action for the audience to eat up. With flawless character design and highly stylized fight choreography, the feature is a visual marvel that never fails to impress. In fact, the storytelling is so visceral and seamless that it's amazing that the film was done in such a short amount of time only to be dumped to the video market (for which, in all fairness, it was developed). It might be a little extreme for the youngins, but for all others, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker is a true classic that delivers an inventive and adventurous take on the character's mythos.

    ''Censored for your enjoyment''

I, personally won't buy this title untill WB releases an uncut version as envisioned by its creators. Paul Dini has revitalized the DC comics' characters and shown how an animated show can entertain all family members. He has captured the essence of the characters. The shows' artists have always kept up the excellent quality in their craft. It's not usual to have a show aimed at kids with good art direction, not to mention an intelligently scripted plot, just look at those tacky Power Rangers. I will rent this movie as soon as it comes out, because I'm dying to see the fate of the future Dark Knight and the sad past of Bruce Wayne. But like I said I won't buy this movie just yet.

    AWESOME!!!!

I just saw this on HBO, never having seen it before. Mark Hamill should win an oscar for his voice of The Joker! He disguised his voice so well, I did not recognize it. Having seen the NEW Batman film, I have renewed my interest in all BATMAN films including the animated series. BRAVO MARK HAMILL!!!!!!!!!

    GOOD

Not as good as the script would indicate, but it still kicks some serious @$$!! Not the biggest ''BEYOND'' fan (the old school version is still the best) it is cool! If the WB! wants to make more money and make fans happy; release an un-edited version of the film. The way that, Paul Dini, that master BATscribe, intended!
