(The complete feature A Hard Day's Night is not included in the set.)

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
For fans eager to begin course work in The Beatles 101, your filmstrips have arrived. This outstanding four-DVD set includes two features Help! and The Magical Mystery Tour and two documentaries The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit and The Making of A Hard Day's Night -- all of which have been available as individual DVDs for several years but are compiled here in a handsome new package. The centerpiece for many will be Help!, the fab four's fantastic follow-up to the groundbreaking A Hard Day's Night. Working again with Night director Richard Lester, John, Paul, George, and Ringo play themselves, charmingly cheeky mop-tops entangled in an absurd plot that finds them pursued across the globe by mysterious men of the East. Help! ranks among the Beatles' finest albums, which by default means the flick contains one of the finest soundtracks ever. Stellar perfomances here include such classics as "Ticket to Ride," "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" and the brilliant title track. Just two years later, the Beatles were into their psychedelic period and unwittingly made music history with the trippy The Magical Mystery Tour by getting their record company to fund a promotional film that is essentially the world's first rock videos. A cinematic curio of bizarre fab fun set around a tour bus, Mystery Tour rewards fans of the period with some of the Beatles' finest music "Penny Lane,""Fool on the Hill," "Hello, Goodbye", moments of dazzling photography -- especially the prism lens work during the suave "You're Mother Should Know" -- midgets racing, and a welcome appearance by the Bonzo Dog Band. The first of the two documentaries in this set, The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit, directed by David and Albert Maysles is especially strong. The filmmakers followed the lads from Liverpool on their brief and historic adventure, capturing the extraordinary social hysterics of Beatlemania. The Making of A Hard Day's Night doesn't pack quite the punch of the Maysles brothers's time-capsule worthy effort, but it's a delight just the same. Produced in the '90s and narrated by Phil Collins -- himself an uncredited extra in the 1964 classic -- it is a cut above the typical making-of feature, if only because the subject matter is so much fun to recall.
