Barnes & Noble - Christina Urban
Ranked 14th in TV Guide's list of the top 25 all-time cult favorites, Beauty and the Beast launched the first of its three seasons on September 25, 1987, on CBS. Putting a modern twist to the "beauty meets beast" fable, the series starred Linda Hamilton as corporate attorney and socialite Catherine Chandler, and Ron Perlman as the mysterious, lion-like creature Vincent. In the series opener "Once Upon a Time in the City of New York," Catherine is abducted by thugs after being mistaken for someone else while she walks through Central Park. After being beaten and having her face slashed, she's left for dead. Emerging from the safety of the tunnels beneath the city, Vincent rescues Catherine and tends her wounds. They discover that they share an empathic -- and eventually romantic -- bond, despite Vincent's initially frightening appearance. Because of this, he remains hidden in the world underneath the city, where he lives with his mentor, "Father" Jacob Wells Roy Dotrice. Much of the credit for making the series into more than just a monster tale goes to Perlman, who brings Vincent to life despite heavy prosthetic makeup that obscures his actual features. Romantic, well written, and a thinly veiled analogy for acceptance in current society, Beauty and the Beast is both a love story and great dramatic television.

    Great Show!

I loved this show from the minute I watched I was hooked! The cast was brilliant and the love story timeless! The love that these two people shared is the stuff dreams are made of! This show can never be copied. The way that Vincent always knew when Catherine needed him and would go to great lengths to protect her from danger was breathtaking! I have never found another show that could even come close to this one. This is a classic

    I Also Recommend:

Travel back in time to a world of fantasy and dreams

Who can forget the wonders of Vincent's world and the agony of the lovers who are spiritually linked yet unable to be together in the Katherine's world? As always, Ron Perlman is outstanding. Being a hopeful romantic, I have tears in my eyes at the end of each episode. I'm saving Season Two for a rainy weekend.

    Fantastic series!

I named my son after the character "Vincent!" I loved this love story so much. Great stories of good vs evil with interesting characters. Too bad it ended so soon. I am thrilled to see the DVD series.

I absolutely loved the first season of Beauty and the Beast. The build up of the love between the characters moved at just the right pace.

This show is a long time coming to DVD

It's about time Beauty and the Beast came out on DVD. I've loved it from the very first time it aired in 1987. Why it was cancelled so quickly, I could never understand. I was only a teenager at the time, but from "Once Upon A Time In New York" I was hooked. I loved the purity that they used to portray the relationship between Catherine and Vincent. And thanks to this show, my standards for my own personal relationships were much higher. I wanted the same kind of love and respect that I saw here and I was lucky enough to find it. I was so excited to finally have it so I can watch Catherine and Vincent's love story unfold over and over again. Television would be a much more enjoyable experience if there were more shows like this one. I'm anxiously awaiting the release of Season 2 and 3.

The Best Romantic series of the 80's!!!

I love Ron Perlman!! I admired his work because I knew he was trained classically, along with Roy Dotrice, who played "Father". I can't tell you how excited I am that it will soon be out on DVD!! I can hardly wait... Anyone who is a fan of Perlman, will be very pleasantly surprised, as to how good this series really was. I was disappointed when the Network wanted to cancel the series--that is when they had to hurry the finale. It was too convoluted, but they made the best of what little time they had left... I have yearned for this series to be on DVD...

    Wonderfully Romantic and Definitely Terrific

This is the series I've been searching for a long time. I can still see the beginning and hear the music in my head. A true fairy tale, updated, and brought to life in such a way that you just have to fall in love every time you see Catherine and Vincent. What truly matters is what is in the heart. Love and friendship truly endure.

What an incredible feast for the senses!

The most beautiful series that ever was on television. Incredible classically trained actors, such as Ron Perlman and Roy Dotrice. What a treat to have them both in the same series. I was disappointed on how it ended, to no fault of the writers and actors. The network was at fault all the way. This series could have gone on for atleast 10 years. Now that Beauty and the Beast is starting to come out on DVD, maybe those that might not have seen it, will be lucky and blessed to glimpse into the fantasy and romance of what was once, the best series ever. Please purchase this set for your collection, lets show the studios and the networks that we KNOW how to appreciate works of art. You won't regret it.

A bond stronger than friendship or love - Fall in Love Again

I fell in love with the beautifully portrayed characters of Catherine and Vincent when the show premiered in 1987. I've long awaited the release of this show on DVD. If you love romance, classical literature and music - check this series out. This is the fairy tale updated for adults. Perhaps the release of the DVDs will show the studio it's time to revisit this magical world of the streets above and below New York City but only with Catherine and Vincent. I think I will fall in love again.

A creative, and heart-breaking take on the timeless tale

Fans have waited too long for this DVD to come to fruition. The short-lived series was, and remains an outstanding creation. It still stands out even next to some of the recent, more eccentric and successful television shows of today (Heroes, Lost, X-files) -- In a time when television was bombarded with flash, and violence Beauty and the Beast proved that romance could be just as thrilling, and just as adventerous as any action-based program. Ron Perlman (Hellboy) and Linda Hamilton (Terminator, Terminator 2) shine in this unbelievable tale! If you missed it the first time, pick up this beautiful collection of highly dramatic, fantastical, and courageous storytelling today -- finally available on DVD!
