Oh, my baby.

This was one of the first shows my roommate and I watched when we moved to KCMO years ago and started renting anime weekly. The guy at the video store called it 'My Baby.' At first, we were confused. It seemed a trifle dull, not awful, but we weren't totally into it. And then we got to volume three, where you find out more about each character, and things start to come together. And by the end, you're sitting for half an hour in trauma because of the events you have seen unfolded before your eyes.
This show is basically my number one. It has good performances, the backgrounds are unbelievable (forgive some of the horses, however), and the emotional turmoil between the central characters is subtly handled in its way. The pay off, in my opinion, is huge. And this show has some of the best outtakes ever in the history of outtakes. So, yeah, this show is a masterpiece. If you can just hold on into the third volume, I promise it's all well-worth it.

And you'll probably find yourself having hour-long discussions about what this or that thing might mean.
