Overview

As engineered by the nonprofit organization The Global Film Initiative, Global Lens constitutes an ongoing series of films from developing nations, strategically selected and issued in North America with the goal of heightening multicultural insight into various countries and societies. This Global Lens box set offers four such features, all produced in China. Included are: Chinese director Liu Yu's 2005 Dam Street, starring Liu as a pregnant teenager struggling to find her place in a male-dominated society; Wang Chao's 2006 Luxury Car, about an elderly schoolteacher who arrives in the city of Wuhan searching for his lost son; Diao Yinan's 2003 coming-of-age drama Uniform, about a young man who dons a policeman's uniform and uses his assumed identity to effect changes in the community around him; and Li Shaohong's 2005 feminist parable A Stolen Life, about a young woman torn between the promise of autonomous adulthood and the demands of subservience to a lover .
