Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The screen’s master of suspense is extremely well represented by this eight-disc box set collecting many of his most memorable films and four outstanding episodes from his popular TV anthology show. Psycho, the 1960 chiller regarded by many as Hitchcock’s best, appears here in its Collectors Edition, which includes censored scenes, newsreel footage, trailers, a photo gallery, production notes, and a separate presentation with and without music of the notorious shower scene. The Rear Window Collectors Edition incorporates an original documentary on the film’s production featuring interviews with filmmakers Peter Bogdanovich and Curtis Hanson, plus assistant director Herbert Coleman. Also included is a re-release trailer narrated by star James Stewart, a conversation with screenwriter John Michael Hayes, a gallery of production stills and posters, and DVD-ROM content. Shadow of a Doubt, the director’s less flamboyant but highly regarded 1942 thriller and his personal favorite, is accompanied by an original documentary featuring interviews with cast members Teresa Wright and Hume Cronyn, production drawings, and a photo gallery. Rope, Hitch’s experimental adaptation of a celebrated stage play, also sports a making-of documentary and still gallery, as do the other DVDs in this set. The Topaz disc is unique in that it gathers together three very different alternate endings shot by Hitch. It also sports a documentary, hosted by film historian Leonard Maltin. The Man Who Knew Too Much, the 1956 remake Hitch believed superior to his 1934 original, is one of several DVDs in the collection to present reminiscences from Patricia Hitchcock O’Connell, Hitchcock’s daughter and a Hollywood veteran herself. Family Plot, the director’s last film, presents the storyboards used by the director as his blueprint for an elaborate chase scene. A disc containing four episodes from Alfred Hitchcock Presents rounds out this superb compilation.
