Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Universal’s second DVD collection of Alfred Hitchcock films, like its first, comprises seven feature films and four episodes from the director’s popular TV series, Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Vertigo, the 1958 psychological thriller starring James Stewart and Kim Novak, is the favorite Hitchcock movie of many influential critics and filmmakers, and it gets the Collector's Edition treatment, with commentaries by associate producer Herbert Coleman and preservationist Robert A. Harris. Harris painstakingly reconstructed the movie from damaged film elements, producing the beautiful print used for this release's digital remastering. Among the other supplements are an original documentary, a production featurette, trailers, production notes, and cast bios. The Birds, a perennial fan favorite, also benefits from a remastering and Collector's Edition embellishments, including deleted scenes, an alternate ending, storyboards, newsreel footage, trailers, production notes, and Hitchcock’s screen test of leading lady Tippi Hedren. Marnie, also part of this collection, pairs Hedren with Sean Connery -- just before he became an international superstar as James Bond. This Marnie Collector's Edition also sports an original documentary, archival material, trailers, and production notes. The remaining films in this set are Saboteur, Hitch’s 1942 Hollywood reworking of his classic 39 Steps; The Trouble with Harry, the delightful 1955 black comedy in which Shirley MacLaine made her film debut; Torn Curtain, a Cold War tale of espionage starring Paul Newman and Julie Andrews; and Frenzy, the British-made 1972 chiller regarded by many as the director’s last great film. The DVDs for these titles all have original documentaries, still galleries, production notes, and theatrical trailers. Like The Best of Hitchcock, Volume I, this box set is absolutely essential for anyone building a DVD home library.
