Originally broadcast on PBS's Great Performances in November 2006, Made in America celebrates the legacy of Brooklyn native Belle Miriam Silverman, born in 1929 and destined to become known as Beverly Sills -- and, more informally, as "Bubbles." Certainly the country's most beloved soprano, Sills achieved international acclaim not only as a diva but later as a visionary administrator who, among other accomplishments, championed subtitling as a way of broadening the appeal of operatic performances. It is Sills the performer, though, who will most charm viewers of this 90-minute production, which includes selections from her 44-year singing career. Rare clips offered here include the 1955 Opera Cameo La Traviata (1955); the CBC's Magic Flute (1966); and a CBS Camera Three profile (1969), featuring Sills singing arias from Julius Caesar in her original New York City Opera costume. The complete 1955 Opera Cameo production is included as a DVD bonus.
