Overview

Kevin Spacey serves as both director and star for this biopic based on the life and career of legendary entertainer Bobby Darin, which moves back and forth between his childhood and adult selves to tell the tale of his remarkable life. Born Bobby Cassotto and raised in the Bronx, young Bobby played as a child by William Ullrich was raised by his mother, Polly Brenda Blethyn, his brother-in-law, Charlie Bob Hoskins, and his sister, Nina Caroline Aaron. At the age of 15, Bobby contracted a severe case of rheumatic fever, which was expected to take his life; while it left him with a weak heart, Bobby beat the odds and survived. Buoyed by a love of music passed along by his mother, Bobby learned to play several instruments and began singing as he recovered. Displaying a confidence and drive which stopped just short of arrogance, he adopted the stage name Bobby Darin and set his sights on becoming a star. After a string of hits as a rock & roll singer, Darin played as an adult by Kevin Spacey takes another gamble, and with the help of manager Steve Blauner John Goodman he reinvents himself as a supper-club vocalist in the manner of Frank Sinatra. All the more remarkably, he succeeds, and his swinging version of "Mack the Knife" tops the charts. Now a major singing star, Darin decides to take up acting; on the set of his first movie, he woos his female co-star Sandra Dee Kate Bosworth, and despite the stern objections of her mother Greta Scacchi, Bobby and Sandra wed. But after a string of successful movies for Dee and hit records and an Oscar nomination for Darin, the shifting tastes of the 1960s throw their careers off-track. Bobby cautiously embraces the new sounds of the day, but his old fans don't want to hear him cover Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones, while the younger audience isn't interested in his new sound, leaving Darin in a difficult place to make his way back to stardom. Kevin Spacey did his own singing for Beyond the Sea, recreating Bobby Darin's vocal style with uncanny accuracy.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
In interviews promoting this engrossing film biography, Kevin Spacey said he believed he was born to play the film's subject, legendary pop singer and movie star Bobby Darin. And it's obvious that making Beyond the Sea was a labor of love for the Academy Award-winning actor: In addition to playing Darin and doing his own vocals, Spacey also directed, produced, and co-wrote the screenplay. Darin, after attaining pop stardom with such hits as "Splish Splash" and "Mack the Knife," married teen queen Sandra Dee, enjoyed middling success in movies, then saw his star decline. After mounting a none-too-successful comeback, he died young age 37 -- not rock ‘n’ roll style from a drug overdose or car crash, but during open-heart surgery. Darin's heart had been damaged by rheumatic fever when he was 7, and doctors did not expect him to live past the age of 15. Yet he was so driven to succeed that his story becomes one of astonishing will more than a sum of career landmarks. And that’s the quality Spacey crystallizes, playing Darin as a committed performer racing against time to leave his mark on American pop culture. He's absolutely terrific in the role, not only replicating Darin's style and sound but also capturing the feverish intensity of a brilliant entertainer all too aware of his physical limitations and determined to transcend them. Well slotted in key supporting roles are Kate Bosworth as Dee, John Goodman as Bobby's manager, Brenda Blethyn as his mother, and Bob Hoskins as his brother-in-law. But this is Spacey's show all the way, and he's positively riveting in one of his best screen performances to date.

    I Also Recommend:

    Terrific tribute to Bobby Darin

What a terrific job Kevin Spacey does of replicating the sound & style of Bobby Darin! While the film is not totally accurate, it's close enough to give the audience the desperate feeling of the race against time that was Darin's life. Great supporting cast, wonderful music.

    A reviewer

Many folks say Kevin Spacey was too old to play the part of Bobby Darin, but he did such a fantastic job. I was completely enthralled with this movie. Spacey is more talented than many realize, and he was very convincing in this role.

The Fantasy Story Of Bobby Darin!

Okay, there is no doubt that Kevin Spacey is a very good actor and Beyond the Sea has very bright vivid colors and good songs but Kevin Spacey was too old to be playing the young Bobby Darin when he was a teenager and in his twenties and I can't help feeling that this movie with it's musical and dance fantasy sequences wasn't very original and copied the musical fantasy and dance sequences format of the movie De Lovely. They also glossed over the fact that Bobby Darin and Sandra Dee got divorced.

    Beyond The Sea Is Amazing!

I began watching this movie knowing absolutely no backround history about Bobby Darin. I watched this movie and was absolutely amazed by the life of this talented man. The cast was perfectly selected and the music and dance sequences were delightful. I would recomend this movie to anybody from a Bobby Darin fan to anyone who just enjoys a good musical story. TWO THUMBS UP and FIVE STARS for this movie!!!

    Disappointing

I like Kevin Spacey and his acting was great, however the film itself was not what I thought it would be. Something was missing. It seemed to be more of a musical than an actual film on Bobby Darin's life.

    Amazing Kevin Spacey!

Just finished "Beyond The Sea" and was truly amazed. Kevin Spacey is a favorite actor, but he showed his true talent range in this movie. I learned more about Bobby Darin than I had known. He was a star when I was a kid and I liked his music but didn't know much about the man. This movie made me sing along and also made me cry. I highly recommend it!

Maybe you'll like it better than me

I'm a Kevin Spacey fan and he was, as usual, great in this movie. But the movie itself is the problem. I'm sure others would like it, but it just wasn't my type of enjoyable movie. I couldn't watch the whole thing.

    DISAPOINTED SPACEY AND DARIN FAN!!!

WOW!! I waited months to see a movie that did not show in my hometown--and now I see that the local theatres would have just wasted a good screen!! I love Spacey and loved Darin's music and tv show, but this is an EXTREMELY weak movie!! In bios, let's just stick to the story and leave out "dream and dance sequences" that showed the viewer little--just that Spacey is an ok dancer!! Also, the screenplay was incomplete, corny in areas that could have been extremely profound, and the music was weak as water!! Had my husband and I paid $20+ to see this movie, I believe I would have sued the theatre--and the studio and Spacey!! And to see the classic "Mack the Knife" SLAYED by Spacey's singing "debut" was repulsive!! Instead of wasting 2 hours of your life watching Spacey's self-indulgent dud, buy a Darin Cd, spend 20 minutes listening to GREAT music, and go to the library and check out one of the successful, recent books written on Darin's life and give it a try. This movie is a DUD!! And to think that Spacey got a Golden Globe nomination out of it---shows how weak the Foreign Press and their opinions are!! FORGET ABOUT IT!! Dissapointed in NC!!

    Spacey Sings !

What makes this movie bio different from most others? Kevin Spacey did the singing. Anyone could have mimed Bobby Darin's voice but Spacey took the gutsy move of singing. Did he pull it off? Yes! To tell the full Bobby Darin story you would need far more than two hours. Spacey did a great job of taking the high and low points of Bobby's life and bringing it to the screen. This movie is a love story between Bobby and Sandra Dee, not just a biography of Bobby Darin.
