Overview

The drama Big Bad Love comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1, and is preferable to the standard full-frame image that eliminates practically fifty percent of the original image. The English soundtrack is impressively rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. There are no supplemental materials of any consequence, but MGM/UA has done a great job with the sound and picture quality on this release.

The first thing you should know about this movie: it will hurt your brain, and it will move your forcefully out of your narrative comfort-zone. That said, "Big Bad Love" is a lyrical, visceral story. Arliss Howard is amazingly eloquent in his roughneck, unpolished character. His portrayal of addiction, the writing process, and the intermingling of both leaves you dazed and a little bit breathless. What's more, the soundtrack is an amazing propellant, with Tom Waits, Asie Payton, et al. pushing the film along with their dirty, backwoods blues style. Quite frankly, this movie has quickly become one of my all-time favorites, and it is well worth the hunt to find a copy.
