When a bank robber escapes from prison and goes on a violent crime spree, Malcolm is assigned to bring him in. The thief's girlfriend Sherry Nia Long, who is also the mother of his child, lives in a small Southern town, and Malcolm plans to set up a stake-out in the house across the street from Sherry's. However, the house is owned by Big Momma Ella Mitchell, an older woman with a sharp tongue and no patience for back talk, and when Big Momma has to leave town, it leaves her house suspiciously empty. Determined to maintain his cover, Malcolm disguises himself as Big Momma, and now has to convince Sherry and everyone else in the neighborhood that Big Momma's still in town. Big Momma's House gained considerable pre-production publicity when Lawrence fell into a coma while jogging in a heat wave before the film's start date; Lawrence claimed that he was trying to lose weight to fit more comfortably into his character's "fat suit."

Step aside, Tootsie, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Mrs. Klump -- Big Momma's in the house! Martin Lawrence is FBI agent Malcolm Turner, hot on the trail of a bank robber who has broken out of jail. Turner goes undercover to infiltrate the world of the thief's ex-girlfriend Sherry (Nia Long), donning latex and foam to disguise himself as her hefty aunt, the cantankerous southern matriarch Big Momma. As formula dictates, things begin to get complicated when, amidst a barrage of gross-out jokes, Turner becomes smitten with Sherry. You have to appreciate Lawrence for his willingness to put himself all the way out there for our enjoyment. Even extroverted New York Knicks power forward Larry Johnson gave up the Grandma-ma drag before typecasting became an issue. But since Big Momma's House proved pretty close to its boast of being "the mother of all comedies" at the box office, it looks like Lawrence will do some dress duty for years to come.

One of the biggest box office hits in a summer when several African-American-themed comedies earned sleeper hit status, Big Momma's House (2000) stars comic Martin Lawrence, but owes more than a small debt to the work of Eddie Murphy. Lawrence, a former Murphy costar, successfully mimics Murphy's formula of playing one character in leading man fashion and another buried under heavy layers of prosthetics and makeup, a canny decision that resulted in a hit for Lawrence and a rise in his per-film salary. The supporting cast and Raja Gosnell's direction rank as adequate, but Big Momma's House is Lawrence's film, and he makes the most of it, mining broadly crowd-pleasing moments not only for their laugh appeal but for a few tugs on the heart strings as well. In the same summer, Murphy would also score with his own multi-character comedy, Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps (2000).

    A reallly funny movie love the fullframe version!

    Out of all The Big Momma House movies this was my favorite one its funny even funnier than Mrs. Doubtfire You can't help but to laugh at Martin Laweernce in this movie he is indeed funny!

    Big Momma, big dissapointment.....

    I did buy the DVD and I am not really sure why...Martin Lawrence is his same 'ol self...kind of like Richard Simons or Jerry Lewis...NO suprises, this movie is similar to a high budget fox sit-com....not recomended.....

    I saw this in the theater

    It's just Mrs. Doubtfire meets The Nutty Professor, but Martin Lawrence has never been as funny as Eddie Murphy or Robin Williams. Not even on TV. He screams too much.
