Though ignored during its initial release, Big Trouble in Little China has since proven to have a solid fan base with its particular (and slightly ahead of its time) blend of kung-fu high jinks. The two-disc set features the film on one disc with the second disc reserved for the special features. The flawless print is presented in widescreen (anamorphic) with an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. The language choices are English Dolby Digital 4.1 Surround, English DTS, and English and French Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround. Disc one is rounded off with a great commentary track featuring director John Carpenter and the film's star Kurt Russell. It's obvious that the two have been friends for a long time as the track is full of plenty of laughter and great stories. Disc two is loaded with features, including three trailers and six TV spots. There is an extended ending as well as eight deleted scenes presented as work prints. The quality of these scenes is serviceable but they are definitely worth a look. There is a seven-and-a-half-minute electronic press kit from the release time of the film which features interviews with the major stars and behind-the-scenes footage. There is a cast and crew filmography section and a music video of John Carpenter singing the title theme. Magazine articles from American Cinematographer and Cinefex are presented with the option of enlarging the featured pictures. There is also a 13-minute interview with special effects wizard Richard Edlund which allows for optional two-angle viewing. One angle is the on-camera interview with effects stills presented in a small supplemental screen. The other option allows for the stills to be onscreen full frame. The disc is completed with a stills gallery of over 200 images. This is a special edition in every sense, which will please all fans of this movie.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Jason Bergenfeld
Long before Jackie Chan teamed up with Chris Tucker in Rush Hour, East met West on the big screen in director John Carpenter's celebration of everything chop-socky, Big Trouble in Little China. Carpenter mainstay Kurt Russell stars as Jack Burton, a straight-shooting macho trucker -- is there any other kind? Burton and his old pal Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) head to the airport, where Chi's fiancée, Miao Yin (Suzee Pai), is due, and when she's kidnapped upon arrival, the adventure begins. Equipped with a trademark mullet hairdo and a one-liner for every occasion, Burton teams up with Chi and feisty, know-it-all attorney Gracie Law (Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall) for a rescue mission in Little China's seamy underground, a world ruled by martial arts and sorcery. The film uses kitsch and camp to supreme advantage, mocking the martial arts and action genres while simultaneously adoring and reinventing them. Among its truckload of extras, the two-disc Special Edition DVD includes deleted scenes, an extended ending, and an unforgettable audio commentary track with Russell and Carpenter discussing everything from learning to drive a rig in San Francisco to their children's hobbies. This chumminess is no surprise, as the old friends have worked together on several films, including the 1981 cult classic Escape from New York, its 1996 follow-up Escape from L.A., and 1982's The Thing. Packed with action and laughs, Big Trouble in Little China is a dizzying, hyperkinetic delight.
All Movie Guide
Kurt Russell has a great time doing his best John Wayne impersonation in Big Trouble in Little China, an enjoyably offbeat adventure tale from horror director John Carpenter. Borrowing its style from the Indiana Jones movies, Big Trouble is set in the underworld of Chinatown where centuries-old wars are fought with swords and sorcery. Picking up where his Snake Plissken left off in Escape from New York, Russell stars as a cocky, boisterous trucker who gets caught up in the madness. While the fight scenes are sharply choreographed and exciting, Carpenter maintains a humorous, tongue-firmly-in-cheek mood that has as many funny gags as it does duds. The supporting cast -- led by Dennis Dun, James Hong, Victor Wong (also in Carpenter's Prince of Darkness), and Kim Cattrall -- also appears to be having a good time with the material. The extensive special effects are not among the best of their time, but they are perfectly in keeping with the film's light tone. Highlights include several garish-looking creatures and excellent aging makeup work on the villain.
