Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
A versatile singer-songwriter with an inexhaustible gift for melody, Billy Joel is a true American original. As adept at Tin Pan Alley sophistication as he is at rock, Joel moves listeners with his poignant slice-of-life imagery, much of it taken from his Long Island milieu. This DVD shows Joel equally bold in the video arena. All the memorable moments from his conquest of music television are here. "Uptown Girl," for instance, seems at once an '80s touchstone, a '50s throwback, and a uniquely personal tribute to the beauty who was then his new girlfriend, Christie Brinkley. There's also loads of fun here, from the doo-wop flashback reunion of "The Longest Time" to the wacky, inspirational lyricism of "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" to the finger-snapping silliness of "Tell Her About It" (with a Rodney Dangerfield cameo, no less). Of course, no Joel collection could be dubbed "Essential" without his signature tune (and video): the sleek, black-and-white film of "Piano Man." The bonus DVD material includes live renditions of "Good Night Saigon" and "Leave a Tender Moment Alone." Tracks are as follows:
  • Piano Man
  • All for Leyna
  • Tell Her About It
  • Honesty
  • Sometimes a Fantasy
  • The Night Is Still Young
  • Pressure
  • My Life
  • Keeping the Faith
  • A Matter of Trust
  • You're Only Human (Second Wind)
  • Everybody Loves You Now
  • Uptown Girl
  • You May Be Right
  • Big Shot
  • The Longest Time
  • Allentown
  • Los Angelenos
  • It's Still Rock and Roll to Me
  • Baby Grand (with Ray Charles)
  • She's Right on Time
  • Goodnight Saigon (Live)
  • Leave a Tender Moment Alone (Live)
  • James

For People which native Language is not english, the only music could be enough to measure this Excellent Singer-Songwriter....but that is not the only thing that captures attention Worldwide : His Energy in the Stage, His Extraordinary Lirics which can be felt -not only listen- and principally, His Unique Freshness and Vitality that shows with all and every Song He sings. He is not only a Great Musician, is also One of the Greatest Personalities of His Time and one of the Best Rock&Roll Composers of All Times !!!!

I have been a fan of Billy since I was 9 years old. I would give this collection a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I took off half a point because it doesn't include the original 'Piano Man' video, instead it is a live version from his concert at Yankee's Stadium. I am scratching my head why he would use this poor version of his signature song. The other 23 videos are outstanding. The highlight is the duet with Ray Charles 'Baby Grand'. Overall you can't go wrong for $10.
