Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
While the more cynical could dismiss this computer-animated feature as a 70-minute commercial for Lego's popular action-figure franchise, Mask of Light will be a perfect fit not only for fans of the toys but also for those transported by Tolkien-like mythology, stories set "in the time before time," and characters with names such as Takua and Makuta (Takua Makuta / What a wonderful phrase...?). Such fantasies are only as good as their villain, and Mask of Light boasts a doozy: Makuta, who has enveloped the once-idyllic island paradise of Mata Nui in shadow. Jaller and his recklessly adventurous friend Takua (a.k.a. the Chronicler) find the Mask of Light and embark on a quest to locate the elusive seventh Toa, who would join Mata Nui's six other guardians to defeat Makuta and his fierce minions. Knowledge of the toys and the robot characters is a plus, but the DVD edition does contain a helpful back-story segment that orients viewers to the characters and various environments. The voice cast is enthusiastic, and plenty of video game-like action keeps the excitement building.

Bionicle: Mask of Light is a very well made computer animated film. The voice acting is convincing, the graphics are amazing, and the story is rich in detail. Although it might be a bit hard to follow if you're not a Bionicle enthusiast, the filmmakers do a decent job of trying to play ''catch-up'' for you. It might also be a bit on the scary side for some younger kiddos (which explains the PG rating), but is altogether a great piece of work. I was glad to add this one to my DVD library.

Attention Lego Fans. If you love lego and love Bionicle, this is the Movie. It's non-stop action as the Toa battle the Rhakshi, The Makuta Sons. At the saem time, two Matoran seek the legendary Seventh Toa which will bring light to the darkness and awaken Mata Nui.
