Taking a "revisionist" approach to several DC Comics favorites, the weekly adventure series Birds of Prey could easily have been retitled "Charlie's Superheroines." Overview

Taking a "revisionist" approach to several DC Comics favorites, the weekly adventure series Birds of Prey could easily have been retitled "Charlie's Superheroines." Dina Meyer headed the cast as Barbara Gordon, who in her younger days fought crime in Gotham City as the caped-and-cowled Batgirl. Confined to a wheelchair since being attacked by the archvillain Joker, Barbara, now calling herself "Oracle", continued to battle evil as the mentor of her ward Helena Kyle Ashley Scott, the out-of-wedlock daughter of stalwart hero Batman and slinky villainess Selena Kyle, aka Catwoman. Donning the crimefighting guise of "the Huntress", Helena likewise had a score to settle with the Joker, who was responsible for Catwoman's demise. Joining these two courageous ladies in their ongoing war on villainy was telepathic teenager Dinah Laurel Lance, aka "the Black Canary." Others in the cast included the perfidious Dr. Harleen Quinzel Mia Sara, otherwise known as Harley Quinn a character introduced on the various Batman animated cartoon series of the early '90s, and "official" lawman Detective Jesse Reese Shemar Moore, whose dedication to his work was born of a disreputable childhood. Birds of Prey first aired on October 9, 2002.

    Great Series, Horrible DVD's

    Great Series, Horrible DVD's

I watched this on TV and loved it. The stories of Batman's daughter. Plus her evolving connections to Dina and Helen. comic relief was well timed, fights believable, villians to both love and hate. An energizing theme song, and powerful battle music. This was a series to love.

Then this DVD comes out. The theme song is gone, and it's replacement puts me to sleep. If that had been the original theme I wouldn't have finished the pilot. They changed the battle music also. The final battle in the clock tower, the climax of the series originally had battle music to thrill and back up the actions of each character. The changes really sucked.

I'd give the TV series 5 stars, this DVD barely deserves 3.

The Short-lived Story of Batman's Little Girl

"Birds of Prey" was cut way too short! It's a great short-lived show that packed quite a punch for only surviving 13 episodes. Even though the series is quite short . . . I must admit that it was 10 hours worth of SUPER HERO HEAVEN! I instantly feel in love with Huntress, Batgirl a.k.a Oracle, and Dinah! And don't forget Dr. Harlene Quinzel a.k.a Harley Quinn! I think my favorite parts about the series were the interactions between the main characters, plus the great sexual tension betweeen Huntress and Detective Reese. The series is a blast and thankfully leaves you with a pretty decent ending. Trust me . . . you will want more, but the ending gives you some decent closure.
I would urge any comic book fan to buy this series, or anyone who just loves a great female cast. I really enjoyed the series and will continue to go back and watch it threw the future years. Sadly though, I will always wish their were more episodes, but I digress.
In conclusion, great series, great cast, decent acting, decent story, and hell of alotta action! Good series to watch on a rainy day!

    I Also Recommend:

    Bought it for Gotham Girls

This short-lived TV series never found its audience unfortunately. The episodes are really pretty decent and have a firm foundation in their comic book origins. Though this is all true, I really bought the series only for the bonus Gotham Girls episodes, which were previously unreleased areas of the DC Animated Universe. Although the first two seasons are rather light-hearted fair, the third season is a well written mystery tale and fits in well with much of the other DCAU productions. Buy this set for those mini cartoons and you will not be disappointed (though the animation is of lesser quality then the other DCAU shows).
