    Black Rain

I had seen "Black Rain" before, but have now purchased it on Blu-ray.

I think that this movie highlights the talents of two fine actors, Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia. While he is less known in the U.S., Ken Takakura, well known in Japan, provides an outstanding performance.

The photography in Japan is top-shelf and the sense of Japanese culture is delivered with realism.

The story line is exciting and action-packed. The sound track, with Japanese overtones, provides perfect company to a fine script.

Although I am sure that Michael Douglas would disagree, I have always felt that this was one of his finest performances.

Straight-up copy thriller with some nice touches

"Black Rain" doesn't offer too many surprises, but it's intelligent above average and enormously entertaining. Michael Douglas is Nick Conklin, the usual tough, gritty, New York City detective. He's fierce and he's good - 20 minutes into the film he encounters Sato (Yuskau Matsuda) and in a brief but brutal sequence captures the elusive Japanese Yakuza thug and gets slashed with a razor knife for his trouble. But Nick has problems - he may have stolen money from a drug dealer, and Internal Affairs is interested - and so his boss jumps at the chance to get Nick and his partner Charlie (Andy Garcia) out of town for a while by having them escort Sato back to Japan for trial. But Sato escapes easily, and in shame and desperation Nick & Charlie must team up with "Masa" (Tokyo policeman Masahiro, played by Japan's enormously popular Ken Takakura) to re-capture Sato and restore their pride and reputations. Kate Capshaw is pleasantly distracting as "the girl", but isn't given much to do.

As entertaining as the story is, the real star here is Ridley Scott's cinematography. Japan is steamy, sweaty, glittery, smoky, and misty - "Blade Runner" fans will feel right at home in Scott's Tokyo. The textures are rich - film noir in color.

And so how better to view the film than Blu Ray. The transfer is excellent, with only a few minor glitches here and there - at age 20 the film has never looked better. Film grain is visible in a few low-light scenes, which is typical as directors chemically "push" the exposure of the film, but given the overall darkness of the film's palette the quality is outstanding. Hans Zimmer's percussive score punches through nicely. Disc supplementals include a commentary track and a nicely done, informative "making of" piece. 4/5, and lots of fun.

    It's raining black

It took me about ten times to figure out why it was called black rain but that's because I don't pay attention. If you want a good cop movie this is it. If you like hearing little mikey dougy say things like, hotdog-cowboy-and honcho then this is your flick.
