This movie is difficult to classify, at Barnes & Noble it is kept under Horror/Thriller though aside from the plot point of "Blindness" this could easily fall under Drama. As others have said the film is about this blindness disease that makes everyone start seeing white at all times. They never go into the medical "why" or "how" of how this happened. This isn't that kind of film. It shares with "28 days later" the apocalypse type scenes of entire city streets abandoned due to something no one understands. And what different people do because of that, and that is the part where "Horror" and "Drama" mix.
The first half of the film features the first group of blind as they try to cope with their disease and hope for the best, they even try to get along in a government ward with little provisions and no supervision. As more people come into the ward and differing personalities start to collide the film becomes extremely difficult to watch and proves to a be a very strong "R" rating.
The second half, after the group leaves the facility has an oddly freeing quality after having been stuck in the wards. Even as an audience not knowing what is being done in their outside world to help them is affecting. Not in the least an uplifting film, I found the movie to be interesting and intellectually stimulating. A film I would recommend and definitely interesting to watch and discuss afterwards.
Unentertaining, unitellegent, uncivilised, uninspired, uninspiring. Of course there was the surprise of the stock footage. Way to go Hollywood!

The previous reviewer either has the attention span of your average 10-year-old, or he *IS* a 10-year-old.
This film is about what people do when the delusions they surround themselves with so that they can believe that they are good people (i.e. better than others) and in control of their lives fall away and leave them as naked and helpless as children. It's about how people change in the face of adversity. It's about the ability of human nature to adapt. The sex and violence portrayed is gritty and realistic ... it's not just provocative filler to get butts in movie theater seats.
If you don't like movies that make you think, don't bother watching this movie. But if you do, go ahead and just buy it now.
Here's the synopsis: A bunch of people go blind without warning. Chaos ensues. Julianne Moore doesn't go blind. Her husband does. More chaos ensues. The blind people are put in some anonymous decrepit building where they splinter off into societal groups. Extreme chaos ensues. They escape when the guards apparently got bored or went blind. Nobody knows. The city is in ruins. Why? Everybody is blind. Except Julianne Moore, who is apparently protected by freckles. She pretends she is blind and stays with her (blind) husband and the rest of the blind group ostensibly to help, but I think she just liked peeping at naked people and zig-zagging around with sighted abandon.
The Julianne Moore group settles into her old apartment, which has somehow escaped any sort of damage from being abandoned (in a city of blind, starving lunatics) besides a bowl of rotten fruit. The women shower together in the rain. The "family" has a lovely dinner with cloth napkins and nice china. Later in the movie, one of the original blind guys gets his sight back, just like that. Happiness ensues. The end. HUH? What the ....
Is this a horror movie? A drama? I don't know. it was depressing, and I kept looking at the time to see when it would end. The "bonus features" share with us how actors blindfold themselves to get used to being sightless. WOW! Imagine that!
Look, I gave it 2 stars because it posed some interesting psychological questions and it showed women showering together. Aside from that, it's not that good.
