Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kryssa Schemmerling
Gidget meets Rocky in Blue Crush, a breezy tale of female surfers that goes beyond babes-in-bikinis exploitation. Nubile newcomer Kate Bosworth stars as Ann-Marie, a big-wave surfer on the North Shore of Oahu whose drive to make a comeback after nearly drowning in a surfing competition is complicated by her romance with a handsome football player. Thankfully, the script, which is based on a New Yorker article, delves beneath the travel brochure image of Hawaii to show us the other side of paradise. Ann-Marie and her surfer buddies Sanoe Lake and Girlfight’s Michelle Rodriguez work as maids at a posh resort and share a beach shack with Anne-Marie’s wayward young sister and charge Mika Boorem. With no college or career prospects on the horizon, winning a surf contest and joining a pro tour means financial security, as well as glory, for these girls. Bosworth, a fresh-faced blonde with a megawatt smile, isn’t as believable playing a tough surfer chick as are Rodriguez and Lake. But director John Stockwell crazy/beautiful elicits a surprisingly solid, sympathetic performance from her as Ann-Marie struggles between her need to prove herself and her desire to take the easy way out. The other actresses are fine, too, and the banter between the three feels natural and convincing. Best of all, the surfing footage, with its thrilling, digitally enhanced shots of monster waves and bone-crushing wipeouts, offers a pure visceral rush. Great to look at and a lot of fun, Blue Crush serves up its message of female empowerment with a splash.
All Movie Guide - Brian J. Dillard
Although its standard-issue plot and dialogue aren't in danger of winning any awards, it's hard not to root for this good-hearted, often thrilling surf flick. Blue Crush is so sure that girls rule that it doesn't waste much time establishing the fact, and its collection of burners and alterna-kids is so rough-edged and authentic that all thoughts of prefab John Hughes suburbia can easily be banished. Instead of faux high-school politics and strident feminism, the film focuses on spectacular footage of extreme surfing, with just enough working-class back story to lend the ESPN-isms dramatic heft. With a chip on her shoulder and some definition in her biceps, model-perfect Kate Bosworth is never less than adequate as pro hopeful Anne Marie, the focus of the story. That ethnically balanced sidekicks Michelle Rodriguez and Sanoe Lake would probably make more convincing star athletes is a minor quibble, easily chalked up to cold Hollywood reality. (Besides, it's more fun to watch Rodriguez generate Resident Evil-style lesbian subtext in her supporting role than it would be to see her sidle up to a quarterback beau in the lead.) It's a cliché to say so, but the real stars are the wave-riding action sequences, which seem more like an IMAX documentary than the payoff in a sports-themed romance. Director/screenwriter John Stockwell goes in for a few too many motivational clichés at the end, but once the digitally tweaked Bosworth is in the eye of a swell, Blue Crush is pure action, the script incidental.
New York Times - A.O. Scott
It's hard to resist being swept up in Blue Crush, not least because David Hennings's shimmery photography carries the breeze and spray of the island right into the theater.
Washington Post
A big, sexy, sun-splashed thrill ride. Ann Hornaday
Chicago Sun-Times - Roger Ebert

Looking at the posters for Blue Crush, which show Bosworth, Rodriguez and Lake posing with bikinis and surfboards, I expected another mindless surfing movie. Blue Crush is anything but. Roger Ebert

I give this movie two thumbs up!

I can not think of any other movie like this. I liked the fact it was based on a female because most things in life are based on men. If I could be freinds with a girl like Ann-Marie then I'd be lucky.

fantastic sound and camera work for home theatre

This DVD is great if you have a quality home theatre system. Way above average in the mix of sound effects and video. Hard to find a movie that has a little zing in it for camera effects and sound effects.
