    Wonderful

This is an excellent production. The orchestra, chorus and ballet are first-rate, and Gergiev leads them with finesse. The sets and costumes are very well designed. Luckily the singers are all very good as well. You get to see Olga Boradina and Sergei Leiferkus in their early years. Tenor Alexei Steblianko has a powerful voice, though his acting is shallow. I find it a little curious that this Kirov production of Russia's greatest opera has a Russian conductor, director, orchestra, chorus and cast, yet they brought in a Brit to sing the lead role. Lloyd's portrayal is very good, though someone hoping for a sonorous Russian basso might be a bit disappointed with his voice. His acting is good, gentle with his kids and brutal with Shuisky. I think he drastically overacts the death scene, though. As always, he is hard to understand since his mouth tends to mush consonants. The staging is very impressive. A pendulum swings at the back of the stage, and the ending has the simpleton surrounded by bodies as he sings his song, with a bloody axe lying at the front of the stage. Subtitles are given in 6 (!) languages. There aren't many Russian operas on DVD, so don't hesitate to get this one.
