Overview

Released on DVD after gaining a wider audience on video, Bound features a 1.85:1 widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital capability, as well as trailers and a highly entertaining commentary track. Whereas most commentaries only feature the one or two filmmakers, the Bound feature-length audio commentary features writer/directors Andy and Larry Wachowski, cinematographer Bill Pope, Joe Pantoliano, Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon and sex consultant Susie Bright. The commentary sounds like all involved recorded it on a random afternoon, with the stars arriving at different points in the track. Jennifer Tilly, for example, arrives somewhere in the middle of the film, breathless with apologies. Gina Gershon only makes it for the final reel. The feeling is incredibly informal and everyone seems to have fun in each other's company, making the commentary more entertaining for the listener. Susie Bright's involvement makes the commentary even more worthwhile. She takes her role of sex consultant on the film seriously and adds insightful comments to some of the imagery and material in the film. Bound is presented in its uncut version, which restores a minute of film deemed too explicit for its U.S. release. As an example of a successful commentary track, Bound's DVD release is highly recommended.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jason Clark
A schlocky, B-movie concept given a stylish, undeniably exciting twist, this auspicious first feature from Andy and Larry Wachowski, (whose most notable previous screen credit was scripting the silly Sylvester Stallone-Antonio Banderas thriller Assassins) gives neo-noir a cheeky new life. It has the standard good guys-bad guys storyline, but the freshness of the film lies not in making our protagonists sexy lesbian women (though that creates much interest), but in the fact that the directors allow sufficient character development. The film is sexy without being smutty, visually innovative without being too in-your-face, and acted to perfection by a highly intuitive cast of performers. It received much notice for its admittedly steamy bedroom scenes between the lead females, but equal notice should be given to the taut, fiercely enjoyable storytelling which, despite the lurid subject matter, never feels exploitive or gives the impression of appealing only to the lowest common denominator. Bound's evocative visual style and color schemes would later present themselves in the Wachowski's 1999 mega-hit The Matrix.

    Great start but...

Great cinematography and great plot, however lacks on the development of the relationship between the two protagonists. Too bad that it follows the same queer stereotypes instead of breaking them. I would have liked to see more developing of the two main characters and of their relationship, perhaps leading to more surprises and a more unique perspective. Nevertheless, it's still mostly enjoyable!

    absolutely incredibly cunning, witty,sexy movie

One viewing of this flick is NOT enough, the subleties and inuendoes are amazing. The chemistry between Gershon's and Tilly's character is awesome. The tone here is both campy and suspensefull...Amust see for all..

    Great mob movie!

This movie is one of the best mob movies I've seen in a long time. The cinematography, script and cast are all amazing. What makes this movie even more interesting is that instead of the two main charaters who pair up against the mob and fall in love aren't the normal ''Bonnie and Claude'' man and woman duo. They are two lesbians. Who would have thought!
