Boyz 'N the Hood

Overview

John Singleton's intensely powerful Boyz 'N the Hood is another film that deserves more than it gets on DVD. This disc does include both a full frame and preferred widescreen transfer, framed at 1.85:1 and anamorphic, but neither looks spectacular. Dark scenes are solid and hold up well, with no breakdown, but the remainder of the film often seems soft and lacking in detail. This could be the fault of either the film's low budget or a lackluster authoring job. The sound is also somewhat weak, with an English Dolby Digital surround track that is hallow most of the time, and never shows any sort of dynamic range. Also available are surround tracks in Spanish and French, with subtitles in all of the same languages. As for extra materials, this disc offers nothing more than a trio of trailers, all with a Cuba Gooding Jr. theme, one for this film, and also for As Good as It Gets and Jerry Maguire. With such a powerful directing debut, where is a commentary from Singleton? Likewise, with a subject so controversial (at least when it was originally released), why not a documentary, if not on the making of the film, then on the real situation in respect to gangs? There is so much that could have been done, all one can do is hope for the almost inevitable special edition.

All Movie Guide
Coming two years after Spike Lee's groundbreaking Do the Right Thing, the first movie by African-American director John Singleton was seen as part of the black film movement of the late 1980s and early 1990s. It was the first mainstream movie to deal with gang violence in America's urban ghettos, and its thoughtful approach helped open the door for a number of similarly themed movies in the next few years, including Menace II Society, Fresh, and Juice. Boyz N the Hood stands out because of its honesty and because it successfully humanizes all of the parties involved, including the drug dealers and murderers. The story revolves around three youths who choose to deal with their environment in different ways, and the movie features a two-part structure, which shows their lives when they are children and then when they are on the verge of high school graduation. The central roles are filled well by three newcomers (Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut, and Ice Cube), and their dynamic gives the movie its most memorable moments.

    The Best Movie Ever!!!

Boyz N the Hood is one of the best movies ever. It is basically about how young African American men live their life in "The hood". If your not from "The hood" or have never stepped foot in the hood and you want to experince this side of life then this is the movie to watch. This movie is sad and funny at times . Even though this movie is not based on one particular person the things that go on in this movie really happen in real life. John Singleton did a great job of directing and writing this movie. The actors in this movie are great you can not even tell thier acting, that is the other thing that makes this such a good movie. If you have not seen this movie you have to see it.

    A Truthful Look at Deviance

This film really looks at the heart of what its like to live in an area that is riddled with crime and gang violence. A film that will stand the test of time.

Welcome To California, Wear A Vest!

Welcome to California and yeah it goes down like this, like every day and has sense 1980. Projects? LOL.! Inner city gangs moved into the suburbs in California in the 1980's and into rural areas by 1990 why America slept Califronia gangs moved into your state too. Bangin in Little Rock, just copying us, what a fatal mistake. This ain't nothin to look up to. If you want to make money though invest in Califonia Prisons or funeral homes. Cube? He is no Gangster, he is an Actor and a studio G. This movie is real in Cali you start going to your friends funreals in High School.

    'RICKY!!!'

i just want to point out these kids in the movie don't live in the projetcts. They live in houses in a neighborhood. That said, I think the movie is brilliant and surprisingly funny. Everyone should see this film.

    WOW

I was flipping through the channels one night and I came across this film. At the time, I had never heard of this film but I was a fan of Ice Cube so I watched it. WOW! After the film was over, I wondered how my life would be like if I hadn't seen it. The characters are so real, and why I disagree with some of the film's views on the white community, I couldn't help but praise this film. Ice Cube is the standout actor in this, because it's his debut acting role and he's really really good. Cuba Gooding Jr. is also amazing in this film as is a young Morris Chestnut and Lawrence Fishburne as Tre's father. The film really captured life in the projects. This film showed that most of the residents of the projects are good people and not just blood hungry killers. Menace II Society was also good, but it concentrated too much on the violence of the projects instead of the relationships that develop there. I found this film amazingly true in every definition of the word and I hope that Singleton makes another film that's this amazing. It's a ghetto classic for sure but it's also a film classic. Everyone should see it, not just people in the projects, but everyone. This is about life and death, relationships and fearfulness.
