Dealing with subjects of life and death in a story aimed at kids befuddles many storytellers. The best aspect of Gabor Csupo's adaptation of the classic novel Bridge to Terabithia is the very personal, unique way the character responds to the profound events that affect him. Jess Aarons Josh Hutcherson is a shy boy, unable to express his frustrations with bullies, his father, and the fact that he's forced to wear hand-me-down sneakers from his sister. Only by drawing can he get these feelings out. That is until a new family moves in next door, and soon he has a friend for life in Leslie AnnaSophia Robb, the daughter of authors who love her but let her spend a great deal of time alone. She can create a story with as much facility as Jess can draw, leading to their creation of Terabithia, a fantasy world where the pair symbolically confront the problems they face in the real world. Csupo manifests this fictional world in the most natural ways -- the magical creatures they create in their minds simply appear without any fanfare. These sequences become more and more ornate as the film progresses, but Csupo manages to keep them grounded in an uncomplicated psychological truth. By staying true to these characters' unique personalities, the audience can see them not as symbols but as real people with familiar problems. When fate deals Jess a very painful life lesson in the film's third act, the filmmakers have gotten so far inside the character that the they don't have to overwhelm the viewer with any gaudy emotional excess. For a film that deals with powerful feelings of mourning and grief and guilt, the screenwriters and the director earn profound emotions without magnifying them into melodramatic excess. The viewers experience the pain and catharsis exactly as Jess does. It would be enough that Bridge to Terabithia never talks down to its preteen audience, but it turns out to be something much better because it doesn't talk down to the adults in the audience either.

    Truly Excellent Movie

    I have been waiting for a kids movie to come out that contained real problems, real solutions, friendship, heartache, and lessons about growing up. Bridge to Terabthia contains all of these and more. For too long now every movie for the kid generation have been cartoon animated and in my opinion fun but lacking real lessons. PARENTS... be forwarned you may not want to bring children under the age of 6 to see this movie as it does have a not-so-typical Disney ending and contains such things and bullying and death. This movie has made me cry every single time I have watched it. The acting of both the children as well as that of the supporting adult actors and actresses is incredible and the movie has a very good storyline and plot which stays true to the book. This beautiful work of art deserves several awards in my oppinion so if you have not yet seen it please do.

    Very good movie.

    I took my kids to see this. It is a gentle introduction into life, love and loss. Heartwarming and sad, it is an excellent film with a top-notch cast. And to the reviewer below me, don't ruin it for everyone else by giving away the plot. Just because you are bitter because it's not happy-go-lucky lollipops and rainbows, don't give away the plot.

    The Other Side of the Mirror... But Better

    Whether one slips through an old wood framed mirror or into the mist at the forest's edge, there is always some opportunity for a personal Terabithia, an escape to mystery and happiness. The fun lies in the choice - does one ignore it or embrace it? This movie is all the more interesting than the norm however because it has several levels of psychology. The dark shape who constantly stalks the two forever-friends on the Terabithia side of the creek and appears closer than ever at the end of the story turns out to be the boy's father. Some Freud here. Several levels of story, fantasy and enjoyment lie across the creek in Terabithia, so.... don't miss it!

    I. Absolutely. Loved. It. My older brother hated it. He thought it was cheesy, but hey, isn't it always the "cheesy" movies that turn them off? The ending was a bit unexpected, but I'm glad that they didn't stick to the regular plot of children's movies-- It's all happy and nobody gets hurt, yadda yadda, throw in the little fairies. I'm a pre-teen, and I loved this movie. I love Josh Hutcherson, he's a great actor, and he's very convincing. I don't care much for Annasophia, but I have to say... I have to give her props for her acting in this film. She was wonderful. I cried many times, mostly because of the situations Josh was in! This was one of the best movies of all time!

    best movie ever

    this is now my favorite movie. the acting was excellent by AnnaSophia Robb. i love her so much. i'm still so sad about what happened and i cryed so much(and i mean BAWLING my eyes out!!!)i also love the song AnnaSophia sang. its on my mp3 player and on repeat for about 3 days now!!!

    Very Upseting

    I purchased the video "Bridge To Terabithia" to watch with my Grandaughter. We prepared for movie night with great anticipation of seeing a beatiful movie. I have to say that both my Grandaughter and I were extremely upset with the direction in which the story went. I would not reccommend that anyone who has any feelings purchase this video.

    Katie, a movie freak

    This movie was pretty good. AnnaSophia Robb and Josh Hutcherson did a great job. Before I saw it, I thought they actually went to a real Terebithia place, and was kind of disapointed how they imagined everything. And i hated the ending! But the movie had a cool plot and I liked how they used Terebithia to get away from all the problems in their life.

    AnnaSophia Forever!!!

    I saw this movie on it's opening night, and I thought it was outstanding!!! I was sad for a week after I saw it, but it was totally worth it! Josh Hutcherson is a good actor, and AnnaSophia Robb is OUTSTANDING!!!! AnnaSophia was awesome in Because of Winn-Dixie and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and I am a HUGE fan of hers. But this is DEFINITELY her best performance as Leslie, an outgoing, spunky, imaginative girl. I love AnnaSophia!!!! This movie is so moving, has a good plot and story, special effects, and is all around PERFECT!! It's one of my favorites!!!!!!! AnnaSophia Robb FOREVER!!!!!!!!

    Ridiculously Awesome

    Great story! The characters were awesome I fell in love with them all! The contrast between her family and his, and the world they create is quite imaginative. A great family film...so good, it made my male friends cry! A surprise ending that touches and moves hearts everywhere!

    The Best Movie Since the Passion

    This movie has moved me a lot. It's a good representation of family issues, friendship, public schools in the country (and other places), and the use of imagination. I totally reccomend this movie 100%!!!!

    Better than NARNIA !!!!!!!!!!!

    This movie is best of all! Better than Ghost Rider, Narnia, Apocalypto, Firehouse Dog its the best of ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL !!!!!!!!!!!! Buy it don't think about it ..... BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
