Based on Helen Fielding's hugely popular novel, this romantic comedy follows Bridget (Renee Zellweger), a post-feminist, thirty-something British woman who has a penchant for alcoholic binges, smoking, and an inability to control her weight. While trying to keep these things in check and also deal with her job in publishing, she visits her parents for a Christmas party. They try to set her up with Mark (Colin Firth), the visiting son of one of their neighbors. Snubbed by Mark, she instead falls for her boss Daniel (Hugh Grant), a dashing lothario who begins to send her suggestive e-mails that soon lead to a dinner date proposition. Daniel reveals that he and Mark attended college together, during which time Mark had an affair with his fiancée. When Bridget finds Daniel cavorting with an American colleague, she decides to change her life with a new job as a TV presenter. At a dinner party, she bumps into Mark again, who expresses his affection for her; when Daniel claims he wants Bridget back, the two fight over who deserves her affections the most. Popular British performers Gemma Jones, Jim Broadbent, and Shirley Henderson appear in the supporting cast.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Lucia Bozzola
Many objected to Texan Renée Zellweger's casting, but she more than does justice to the title British singleton in the film adaptation of Helen Fielding's cheeky Pride and Prejudice update Bridget Jones's Diary. Though co-scripters Fielding, Richard Curtis, and Andrew Davies do away with most of the novel's accounting of Bridget's calories, cigarettes, and alcohol, and sadly limit her friends' presence, they retain some of the book's wittiest Bridget-isms through voice-overs as well as dialogue. Director Sharon Maguire (Fielding's inspiration for "Shazzer") occasionally dwells too much on Bridget's humiliations on her way to romance, but Zellweger's performance overcomes the flaws. Famously sporting 20 extra pounds and a pitch-perfect suburban-London accent, Zellweger charmingly nails Bridget's comic self-loathing and sneakily confident sass, underlining why hunky Colin Firth and sexy Hugh Grant convincingly come to hilariously foppish blows over her. Having a humorous go at their own images, Firth's upstanding Mark Darcy resurrects his Pride and Prejudice Mr. Darcy smolder, while Grant's Daniel Cleaver is precisely not his usual stammering nice guy. Bridget may not be a feminist heroine for the 21st century, but Bridget Jones's Diary at least manages to be an increasingly rare bird: a clever romantic comedy.
New York Times - Stephen Holden
Ms. Zellweger accomplishes the small miracle of making Bridget both entirely endearing and utterly real. It is a performance so airy you barely sense the work that must have gone into it. Throughout the film you ardently root for her to succeed and pray that the two men who end up coming to blows over her (in an improbable and awkwardly staged fistfight) recognize her goodness, inner beauty and all-around specialness. ...What it is is a delicious piece of candy whose amusing package is scrawled with bons mots distantly inspired by Jane Austen. So was Clueless, now already six years old. Bridget Jones's Diary is the best and smartest film of its kind since then.

If I could give 6 stars,i so would!Renne Zellweger is amazing,brilliant,inspiring-in other words perfect!Ironically,i also look at bridgetas a great role model for all women! It's not everyday you find a character who is charming, real, witty, strong, and willing to admit that she made mistakes-everything a woman should be.She's not perfect, but that's part of the reasons she looks so flawless to me.What can i say,a great movie,a very great movie!

Superb acting by Renee Zellwegger. She surprised me by her approach to the role and actually making the character more hilarious than the character in the book, which was very hard to top. I was expecting the Texan actress to falter but she delivered in every scene. Colin Firth also did an excellent job by reprising his role from Pride and Prejudice. Both he and Hugh Grant were perfectly casted and perfectly played the part. It was also good to see Grant play a part that was much different from his push-over roles from before. The bottom line is that these actors did a fantastic job and I think what made this movie so enjoyable was that they had a fabulous screenplay to work with. So it was much more than great chemistry between the actors but more like great chemistry between the actors and the storyline.

It was extremely enlightening at a time when I particularly needed to ''escape''! Light and fun and just a great movie for the holidays. My recommendation is light a fire, cozy cuddle on the couch in your jammies with some popcorn and prepare to laugh, laugh, laugh!

This rewrite of Pride and Prejudice is engaging and funny. Interesting how similar Darcy is and how different the female lead is.

This was such a great movie ... it wasn't your typical 'chic flick': the romance was definitely there, but it was also hilarious. I laughed so hard to the point of tears. Renee Zellwegger, Hugh Grant, and Colin Firth were excellent ... Colin Firth, in particular, was incredibly sexy! This is a contemporary reprisal of his role as Darcy (first one was in 'Pride and Prejudice')... he's perfect as the emotionally and sexually repressed 'Mr. Right'. I, too, have just bought the movie ... I've actually lost track of the number of times I've seen it. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a movie sequel!

I read the books first, and I wasn`t blown away. I was also dubious when I heard that they make a movie with R. Zellweger, an American as Bridget, but I do think she did such a great great job. Also, you don`t really need to read the books before watching the film. The movie is witty, funny, what`s more, hilarious sometimes, and the actors are good (Colin First as Mark Darcy - that was cool), and yes, this is more a movie for chicks than blokes, but I had guy friends watch it and they had a good time. You finish watching and come away with a feel-good feeling, which is nice. The soundtrack is quite nice as well.

I absolutely LOVE this movie. I have seen it 3 times and laugh just as hard as the first time I saw it. The cast is incredible, I love the way Colin Firth plays Mark Darcy. I am adding this to my DVD collection.

I could not help giggling throughout the movie. Rene Zellwegger acts so well as Bridget, we can't come to hate Bridget even though she makes common mistakes in the story which might otherwise irritate us. She is charming! This character makes us think about our happiness and true love both of which are difficult to achieve. If you are a woman who wants to get married or have a boyfriend but not succeeding just now, this is a must-see movie! After you have laughed a lot at this, you will definitely get a better eye to get a guy.

This is one of the best romantic comedies I've seen in years. Renee Zellweger is perfect as Bridget Jones, and she carries the film, and makes the character her own. The Academy was brilliant to nominate her for Best Actress, even though she didn't win. Her performance was extremely real and original, and the supporting cast is excellent as well, but it is Ms. Zellweger who owns this movie, and there is a Bridget Jones in every woman, and there maybe a Bridget Jones in every man as well.

I had serious doubts about this movie before seeing it. It looked just like another sappy girl movie, and even though I am a girl, I generally don't like that type of show. Bridget Jones's Diary was so much more than that though...it was one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. And Hugh Grant is so yummy!! This movie has a great plot line and is so easy to relate to as a female :) Excellente!!

This film is wonderful from start to finish! Bridget is so refreshing and fun that it is easy to see why the men in her life find her so adorable. Renee Zellweger is outstanding in the role of Bridget, giving the character depth and warmth. Colin Firth as Mark Darcy is dashing as ever and full of quiet intensity, reprising the Pride and Prejudice character he made famous on PBS. Hugh Grant plays the slimy but charming Daniel Cleaver with a lot of charm. Both men are great to watch on screen and check out the chemistry between Renee Zelwegger and Colin Firth in a few sizzling scenes! A must see movie for men and women alike!

Bridget Jones's Diary is a movie that is enjoyable. When I got this movie, the first week I watch it over and over. I couldn't tell people how many times I watched it, because I lost count after seven. This is a movie that will make you cry and laugh.

I read both books before I saw the film & they were absolutely hilarious. I must admit that the film is excellent aswell but the book is always better than the film. I've watched the film about 10 times already & I'm still planning to watch it many more times. Colin Firth is absolutely gorgeous & you may say I like the film because of him, I've only fancied him in the last week, so that cannot be true, his character is just so sweet. I'm a massive Bridget Jones' Diary FANATIC!
