The hard work, dedication, and personal politics behind "rah rah rah!" and "sis boom bah!" go under the microscope in this engaging teen comedy. Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) discovers that being captain of her San Diego high school's six-time championship-winning cheerleading squad is more complicated than she had imagined. Torrance's parents want her to spend more time on her homework, her boyfriend wants her to spend more time with him, and she learns that the squad's former captain stole some of their best routines from other teams -- and that Isis (Gabrielle Union), captain of a top squad at a crosstown, inner-city high school, plans to fight back this year. To make things worse, when one of the cheerleaders is injured, Torrance is forced to replace her with Missy (Eliza Dushku), a cynical new kid who is involved only because the school doesn't offer gymnastics. In the midst of this chaos, with the national championship around the corner, Torrance couldn't have picked a worse time to fall in love with Cliff (Jesse Bradford), a classmate who cares a lot more about punk rock than school spirit. Dunst trained with a cheerleading squad for her role, though a double performed the more complicated stunts.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Doree Shafrir
At first glance, the surprise box office winner Bring It On appears to be just another pretty entry in a long procession of forgettable teen-centric movies. What separates Bring It On from its classmates, however -- besides some snazzy cheerleading -- is an unusually engaging plot, a witty self-awareness, and an ingratiating lack of self-importance. The new Rancho Carne High School cheerleading captain, Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst), panics when she discovers that her predecessor had stolen their championship-caliber moves from the urban East Compton High, fronted by the no-nonsense Gabrielle Union (10 Things I Hate About You). The pressure is on as Torrance, along with new teammate and best friend Missy Pantone (Eliza Dushku, of Buffy the Vampire Slayer), rush to choreograph an entirely new routine in order to qualify for the championship for the sixth consecutive year. The East Compton squad, meanwhile, is not even sure if it will be able to raise enough cash to travel to the meet. While breezy and fun, Bring it On makes interesting points about white American culture's appropriation of black influences. Veteran TV director Peyton Reed (Mr. Show) welds teen angst, pep-squad spunk, and the amazing dance moves of two very different groups of teenagers into a winning collage. The DVD includes commentary by Reed, deleted scenes, home video footage of the car wash scene, and a music video by the R&B group Blaque.
All Movie Guide - Michael Hastings
The charming Kirsten Dunst imbues a spunky airhead cheerleader with a preternatural amount of life, humor, and compassion in this above-average teen sports comedy directed by Mr. Show refugee Peyton Reed. Bring It On may not have the satirical bite of such teen-competition classics as Smile (1975) and The Positively True Adventures of the Alleged Texas Cheerleader-Murdering Mom (1993), as some critics rightly complained. But what the movie lacks in teeth it more than makes up for in genuine empathy and good humor. Much of the film's success relies upon the inventiveness of the cast and Reed's loose, intuitive way with actors: a protracted, wordless toothbrushing scene between Dunst and love interest Jesse Bradford ranks as one of the summer of 2000's giddiest, most sublime movie moments. The plot follows the by-the-numbers underdog triumph model set by Hoosiers, Rocky, and countless other sports films, but there are enough wrinkles -- a proud, plagiarized competing team from East Compton being chief among them -- to keep the proceedings interesting.

Finally, a movie all about cheerleading comes out! And what better way to do it than with a great, hot, hip, and young cast. I'm glad this movie hit like 15 million the first weekend it came out! Cheerleading is almost at its peak, with guy cheerleaders fitting in and cheerleading hitting many nations like South America. This movie makes the people that I've talked to feel alive!

Bring it on was really funny, a great comedy to buy .. good looking chicks in the movie with all the moves. Funniest TEEN movie I've seen in years, this ones worth buying. It had a interesting story but plots were alright, but moves too fast in the movie. I gave it a 3 star rating cause it was great and funny, just not best i've seen but I gave it a EXCELLENT rating for its perfrormance the hott chicks had brought into this movie. GREAT WORK!!! 18 male here ... with great oponion. LOL

I was facinated by this movie. The stunts were so awesome! If you think that cheerleading is dumb, check this movie out and you might think differently. Once again, the stunts were really aweseome, and it was a great show.

I saw this in the theatre, very well produced movie and some good acting. I am friends with tsianina joelson who is in the movie, she was a few years ahead of me in high school, I would have never guessed she'd be going in this direction, but they all do such a wonderful job with the movie.

Although I just saw this movie over the weekend. My mom and I were having a night alone without my dad and brother. I really hate to say it but we have nothing in common! I was searching through Easy Video when I saw this movie. Many of my friends have told me how much they liked the movie. We rented it! My mom and I both loved it! I would Recomend it! (This is a real Chick Flick.)

There's one star missing in my rating because there was a part missing in the movie... realism. As a competitive cheerleader myself, I watched the movie from a more technical point of view, and let me tell you there was no coach to be found anywhere! Not even gymnastic coaches! Most of the stunts were totally illegal, some of which were illegal even at a college level. In their competition routine they had no cheer, it was all just show and dance. I don¿t know¿ I love cheerleading, I think it is the best sport in the world, but there¿s a lot that also goes on behind the scenes which makes it all real and none of that was portrayed in the movie. Teamwork, fundraising, friendship, brotherhood, guidance, practice, more fundraising and even more practicing¿ But besides all of this, I must admit that it was a good hour and a half of entertainment, and it was nice to see cheerleaders in the big screen that weren't airheaded-sideline-filling-all-girl-both-feet-on-the-ground-zero-gymnastics-blond-bimbo-steoreotipical-hollywood-imaged-pom-pom-shakers.

This movie is a great comedy movie but it's not very realistic, thats why i gave it 4 stars and not five. In the movie there was no coach (which you have to have at high school level) and half of the stunts were illegal for high school level. However, It does show how much work it takes to make it to competition and the hard times that cheerleaders go through to get there. I loved the subject of the movie, competing with rival schools because that happens with almost every school and people can relate to that. I recommend everyone to see this movie, it is a awsome movie besides the unrealistic parts. It will make you laugh at every second!

This is the greatest movie of all time. I totally loved it! It's a great movie for teens, and if you get it on DVD there is the trailer and the Blaque music video for ''As if.'' If you haven't seen this movie, you better get with it because you are missing out!

Today, the common stereotype of a cheerleader would be a) a bimbo, b) a girl c)all of the above. The answer is c. Bring it on proves otherwise in numerous ways. Stiff competition, backbreaking moves, grace, creativity, and so much more. This film isn't just about whiny bimbos. It's about creativity, friendship, and romance. With some sports and skimpy cheerleading outfits thrown in. Enter the world of competitive cheerleading, but brace yourself for some truly awesome moves. Three cheers for Bring It On!!!!
