Overview

The October 2004 PBS hit Broadway - The American Musical chronicles the Broadway musical throughout the 20th century in six episodes, documenting the evolution of this uniquely American art form. Narrated by Tony Award-winning legend Julie Andrews, the series draws on a wealth of archival news footage, lost-and-found television moments, original cast recordings, still photos, feature films, diaries, journals, intimate first-person accounts, and on-camera interviews with many of the principals involved in creating the American musical. You'll see the early days of the Ziegfeld Follies; the optimistic escapism of the Depression-era musicals; the heyday of Lerner & Loewe and Rodgers & Hammerstein; the Andrew Lloyd Webber '80s; and recent phenomena such as The Lion King and The Producers. Broadway - The American Musical is a must for fans of the Great White Way.

The greatest historical theatrical television documentary in the 21st century.

I have watched 'Broadway: An American Musical six times on DVD. It was the best television documentary that I ever seen. This television documentary describes the historical development of American musicals through an upbeat and refinement in art form that were recognized in societal mainstream. Julie Andrews gives a wonderful narration about the broadway musical since she has been a performer on stage and screen for so many years. What a wonderful narrator! It took Mr. Kantor and staff ten years to develop the PBS television documentary. I believe that Michael Kantor and his production staff should be compliment for the hard work and dedication for making this great television documentary on the PBS network. I believe that 'Broadway: An American Musical' should be nominated as best television documentary during the 2005 prime-time Emmy awards.

I Really Wanted to Love it!

My disappointment is probably due having recently attended a screening of a re-mastered copy of 'That's Entertainment', which contained the cream of the MGM musical crop; a fact that becomes glaringly apparent when the original is viewed vis-a-vis Parts I and II. In this instance material was used that had been on several other PBS shows, leading me to wonder why less familiar material hadn't been incorporated. I found the commentary of some of the historians really annoying, voicing opinions as fact rather than mere, if educated, conjecture. It would have been helpful, had on-screen identification been more consistent; there were un-credited appearences, as well as in the case of some of the commentators infrequent credits, so if you missed one, you might never find out whom you were watching. Bottom line, such an effort, is by its nature highly subjective, and although the effort is to be applauded, the end product doen't live up to the hype.

Review is based on the book

The book that was released recently from this PBS special is definetly the definitve narrative of Broadway (Shows). It is an amazingly detailed, well researched, and wonderfully presented tome of one of our countries proprietary properties...the Broadway Show. If the DVD is a fraction of the quality and contains a fraction of the depth of the book, go watch this.
