What's the buzz

This movie was slow, boring and highly overrated, that is why it did not win the Academy Award and Crash did. At the last minute the Hollywood crew must have realized its shortcomings.<BR/><BR/>Although it dealt with the subject matter very realistically and tenderly, it failed as a movie in many levels. If not for the subject matter it would not have been the hit it was. Put a man and a woman as main characters and everyone would have been "ho hum".

This is most definately like the story of my life. I cried like a little girl after this one. This one touched my heart. This one should touch yours too. SMOOCHES.

exceeded my expectations

I watched this for 2 reasons...I had heard all the talk in the media and well, there was nothing left to take out at the library. I wasn't actually relishing the thought of watching a movie that was about cowboys in love. However, that being noted, I was incredibly surprized by the film. If you have some issues with homosexuality, you don't have to enjoy the story from that perspective...there are many other ways to relate to it. The movie avoids being too political, a great relief. The highlights: musical score, cinematography, acting, casting, and the the script. There were a couple of minor flaws. It was difficult to age the characters over a 20-year period and it may have been better to see a little more on the impact the men's relationship had on their wives.

Another Great Epic Romance

This film is clearly not for the close-minded. It is a love story. A damn good one. Sure, the film is slow and there are way to many landscape/scenery shots, but none the less, the film is engageing. I could continue to go on-and-on, but I going just simply say--it's a spectacular love story that had me tearing up by the end.

An Incredibly Touching Movie

This movie was a very emotional and moving movie. I was so emotional at the end (which almost never happens) and I feel it's gonna be a timeless classic. It's worth buying and worth seeing. The only thing it needed was more intimate scenes (between Jake and Heath) but all else was good.

Brokeback broke it!

I felt a little let down by this movie. I had never seen it when it was in the theater, but I had wanted it. It was SO long. And it wasn't anything of what I had expected... a bit disappointing. I mean the message is great, but you have to watch the entire movie.. and it is so long, how could you not fall asleep? Something is missing.

I Simply Cannot Say Enough Good Things About This Movie!!!

I absolutely love this movie! It makes me cry everytime I watch it and I am DISGUSTED that it didn't not recieve the Best Picture Oscar it deserved beyond dispute. It is certainly one of the bravest films of its time, brilliantly acted, and portrayed with extraordinary sensitivity. It is heartbreaking and most certainly a need-to-see social drama especially applicable now during this swirl of controversy concerning gay marriage and rights and anti-homosexual violence. Wonderful, fantastic movie!

The True Best Picture!!

Brokeback Mountain is such an incredible and powerful film and such a strong example of how far Hollywood still has to go to overcome its own homophobia, when it was released Brokeback MT. was critically acclaimed and broke box office records and yet when it came time for the Best Picture Oscar, the cowards of the academy chose Crash (a film that received mixed reviews and performed poorly at the box office when it was first released). Brokeback will forever be remembered as a film that was robbed of its awards at the Oscars!!

Became my obsession for quite a while...

This is a great american love story in the fashion of "An Affair to Remember" and "Brief Encounter". Perfectly acted, beautiful to watch.

Great Love Story

A very heartwarming love story that somehow was made accessible to the masses by Ang Lee in a very courageous way as gay couples obviously are frowned on. This film finally laid to mainstream America that homosexuality is not a sin, but can also be love.

Greatest Love Story In 30 Years

Greatest love story since 1970's "Love Story." Male/female relationships have been done so much that it's refreshing to see a movie like this one show how hard it is to be in a relationship and how prejudices can make people enter marriages of convenience that are more likely to destroy conventional marriages (heterosexual) than gays and lesbians who live without fear. This movie does a great job of showing how the relationship between Ennis and Jack destroys lives more than people realize. I found that the so called "slow moments" at the beginning help you understand the isolation that the two men felt on that mountain. Heath and Jake do an excellent job as the two doomed lovers. The wives (especially Michelle Williams's Alma, who makes you forget her Dawson's Creek years) are effective as well (Anne Hathaway does a good job too but not like Michelle's nominated performance.) The movie's tagline is correct "Love Is A Force Of Nature." Brokeback Mountain and LOTR: The Return of the King are the best movies so far in the 21st century. "Jack, I swear."

The Best Film of All-Time

This movie is a cinematic breakthrough in film history, and I actually haven't seen another movie quite like this one. This is a film that makes us think about the choices we make, and whom we make them with, it also presents the way that love can transcend above such prejudices. The cast is absolutely excellent, especially Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Williams, who give such the stunning performances of their careers. Linda Cardellini, Anne Hathaway, Anna Faris and Randy Quaid provide excellent support, despite their screen time. I was shocked when Crash won the Best Picture Oscar, that was one of the biggest mistakes that the Academy has ever made. Brokeback was the perfect movie of 2005, period.

Too Boring!

I was so completely annoyed when Brokeback Mountain kept winning all those awards for the Golden Globes and Oscars. It wasn't a bad movie. But it wasn't great either. In my opinion, the movie was way too long and boring. I felt like the director just kept taking his time with everything. It was more about the scenery than about the plot and I don't recommend seeing it. I am glad to say that I was relieved when Crash got the best picture award!

Most perfect film

Of the many movies that I've watched, I've never ever cried so hard and been left with such feelings for the characters as I was when I watched this one. "Brokeback" is beautifully done with scenic shots and real characters that you can't help but fall in love with. Recommended for anyone who wants to know why we should love, how happy it can make us, and how important it is not to throw it away because of what others may think.

Very near perfection

Though the reviewer here says it is just a "star crossed love story" it is so much more. A near perfect short story, a near perfect script, outstanding performances by Heath Ledger (who in my opinion) had the most challenging role, and great performances by the rest of the cast. These characters are so real that I think of this movie as almost a documentary, looking into these folks lives and hearts for a glimpse of their truth. This is a very bittersweet story, but absolutely incredibly well done.

Outstanding Movie

Everyone should see this movie. Put away your stereotypes and prejudices and watch one of the most memorable movies of our time. It's truly a story of love between two human beings who just happen to be of the same sex. Love in any form should be celebrated. Very sad and emotional movie. Fabulous job by all involved.

Tragic and trancendant!

Deeply moving romantic epic, not to be missed. Same-sex lovers the world over now have on the screen what straight moviegoers have taken for granted for decades!

Oscar or not......

Brokeback Mountain is a powerful translation of literature to film. The screenplay adaptation by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana of Annie Proulx's short story rivals that of Horton Foote's translation of the Harper Lee classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. The performances of every actor, really, are flawless. Without detracting from Philip Seymor Hoffman's masterful mimicry of Truman Capote, Heath Ledger's creation from thin air of the complex and conflicted Enis Del Mar is iconic: think James Dean as Jim Stark in Rebel Without a Cause. The gay-love-story epithet attributed to this film distorts its majesty: unattainable, conflicted, enduring love framed by the rugged American west and its rich visual imagery. That a cowboy can fall in love with another cowboy is not the defining theme of Brokeback Mountain. It's a simple truth. This is a stunning film destined for a legacy befitting the classic work which it is.
