Ang Lee's adaptation of E. Annie Proulx's story Brokeback Mountain stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as young cowboys named Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar. Each of them is hired to corral sheep on the title location and they soon bond very closely. Their platonic relationship explodes into a physical one, but eventually the two are separated when their job comes to an end. Although the two follow different life paths -- one becoming a father of two and the other marrying into a successful business -- they have a reunion years later. Each is affected profoundly by the rekindling of their old feelings for each other. Those feelings lead each to consider what continuing their hidden relationship would cost them. The screenplay was written by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana.

I watched this for 2 reasons...I had heard all the talk in the media and well, there was nothing left to take out at the library. I wasn't actually relishing the thought of watching a movie that was about cowboys in love. However, that being noted, I was incredibly surprized by the film. If you have some issues with homosexuality, you don't have to enjoy the story from that perspective...there are many other ways to relate to it. The movie avoids being too political, a great relief. The highlights: musical score, cinematography, acting, casting, and the the script. There were a couple of minor flaws. It was difficult to age the characters over a 20-year period and it may have been better to see a little more on the impact the men's relationship had on their wives.
This movie was slow, boring and highly overrated, that is why it did not win the Academy Award and Crash did. At the last minute the Hollywood crew must have realized its shortcomings.
Although it dealt with the subject matter very realistically and tenderly, it failed as a movie in many levels. If not for the subject matter it would not have been the hit it was. Put a man and a woman as main characters and everyone would have been "ho hum".
This movie is extremely good! The movie is about 2hrs and 20 mins long and you won't even notice it if you enjoy the movie! The romance is amazing, heartbreaking even it is very rare to see this type of love on screen because usually is man and woman but movie is way better, not because it's two men. But because the acting was great and the story fit those characters very well (and so did the characters to the actors). The movie was almost perfect for me, the only issues were that the characters basically don't age and that the story had some scenes that were kinda hard to understand (like 1 or 2 scenes so don't worry). But other than that, THE MOVIE IS GREAT!
This film is clearly not for the close-minded. It is a love story. A damn good one. Sure, the film is slow and there are way to many landscape/scenery shots, but none the less, the film is engageing. I could continue to go on-and-on, but I going just simply say--it's a spectacular love story that had me tearing up by the end.
This movie was a very emotional and moving movie. I was so emotional at the end (which almost never happens) and I feel it's gonna be a timeless classic. It's worth buying and worth seeing. The only thing it needed was more intimate scenes (between Jake and Heath) but all else was good.
you will fall in love all over again, this movie should have won the movie of the year. if you enjoy romance movies like "the notebook" you will love this movie.
This is the real Best Picture of 2005, the one that will truly be remembered. A heartbreaking story of love and loss.
Brokeback Mountain should have won Best Picture over Crash. This film is hands down the best film of 2005. Although it is known as the "gay cowboy" movie, it is more of a tragic romance than anything else. It is tragic because of how being gay eats the souls of the two men. They cannot accept their feelings for each other, because they live in a time where it is dangerous to be gay. They wish they weren't gay, but know that they have no choice in the matter. Heath Ledger is magnificent in the role. He talks through clenched teeth, which is true to the character, who he holding his emotions and secrets inside of him, secret from the rest of the world. The film itself is very well made. From the careful camera work to the brilliant screenplay adaptation of Annie Proulx's great short story, everything works. Michelle Williams is very good as Ennis' wife, whose life comes crashing down when she discovers that her husband is gay. Her story is just as tragic as those of the two men. This is far from a political film, but it does carry with it an important message that love is love, and that society as a whole has to be more accepting. After nearly four months since I first saw it, I still can't get it out of my head. It is so emotional and heartbreaking. Please ignore criticism and before judging this film see it for yourself!!! (You don't have to be gay to love this movie!!!) You won't be disappointed. BEST FILM OF 2005, and that's saying a lot, since this was such a great year for movies. Check out the films below that I mentioned. They all are great. (Except Brokeback was far superior to them all, including CRASH).
I felt a little let down by this movie. I had never seen it when it was in the theater, but I had wanted it. It was SO long. And it wasn't anything of what I had expected... a bit disappointing. I mean the message is great, but you have to watch the entire movie.. and it is so long, how could you not fall asleep? Something is missing.
Though the reviewer here says it is just a "star crossed love story" it is so much more. A near perfect short story, a near perfect script, outstanding performances by Heath Ledger (who in my opinion) had the most challenging role, and great performances by the rest of the cast. These characters are so real that I think of this movie as almost a documentary, looking into these folks lives and hearts for a glimpse of their truth. This is a very bittersweet story, but absolutely incredibly well done.
Of the many movies that I've watched, I've never ever cried so hard and been left with such feelings for the characters as I was when I watched this one. "Brokeback" is beautifully done with scenic shots and real characters that you can't help but fall in love with. Recommended for anyone who wants to know why we should love, how happy it can make us, and how important it is not to throw it away because of what others may think.
Having lived and worked in the remote mountain region of Montana on an expansive horse and cattle ranch outside of Yellowstone Park, and witnessing the intermingling of grizzlies, wolves, cattle and horses, I can appreciate the respectul backdrop of this magnificent country. The man to grizzly confrontation of a true mountain man friend while I was there inspired me to write my first and only nonfiction about it. Anyone who enjoys the miraculous life changing events that can occur in a place comparable to Paradise, such as fictional Brokeback Mountain, might also enjoy my nonfictional, Basin and the Deadfall Dance.
WHO EVER HEARD OF GAY COWBOYS? Cowboys are supposed to be tough, not a bunch of stinkin' sissies! I've seen enough of this film to get sick, which didn't take me long! Homosexuality should be a private thing, if you chose to ruin your life that way, but it shouldn't be shoved up our faces. That lifestyle has no place in the movies, tv, at Disney World, and absolutely not in the church, and never the open range! You would be a sissy if you watch this movie! If you want to see real cowboys, watch John Wayne!
the movie was well done, the evolution of the characters grows beautifully! one of the most original & contreversal films i've seen in years. a must see movie,if your mind is open.
Wow, I was moved! I thought the acting was great! The story and filming were wonderful! But then I am a sucker for a love story! This movie and it's characters blew me away. Such strong acting by Jake, Heath, and Michelle. Ang Lee put greatness back into filming!
Deeply moving romantic epic, not to be missed. Same-sex lovers the world over now have on the screen what straight moviegoers have taken for granted for decades!
Brokeback Mountain is such an incredible and powerful film and such a strong example of how far Hollywood still has to go to overcome its own homophobia, when it was released Brokeback MT. was critically acclaimed and broke box office records and yet when it came time for the Best Picture Oscar, the cowards of the academy chose Crash (a film that received mixed reviews and performed poorly at the box office when it was first released). Brokeback will forever be remembered as a film that was robbed of its awards at the Oscars!!
I absolutely love this movie! It makes me cry everytime I watch it and I am DISGUSTED that it didn't not recieve the Best Picture Oscar it deserved beyond dispute. It is certainly one of the bravest films of its time, brilliantly acted, and portrayed with extraordinary sensitivity. It is heartbreaking and most certainly a need-to-see social drama especially applicable now during this swirl of controversy concerning gay marriage and rights and anti-homosexual violence. Wonderful, fantastic movie!
A very heartwarming love story that somehow was made accessible to the masses by Ang Lee in a very courageous way as gay couples obviously are frowned on. This film finally laid to mainstream America that homosexuality is not a sin, but can also be love.
just shows how love can try to help with lifes situations shows how much fear has been generated by CHRISTIAN HATREAD for people created by GOD, but not let live as he created . thank goodness for the new times and people realizing that GOD created everyone and it not up to HUMANS to say how we live.
