Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
A vehicle designed to launch country music star Toby Keith's acting career, Broken Bridges breaks little ground, plot-wise, but certainly arrives at its destination, thanks to earnest performances from Keith and his supporting cast. He plays hard-partying, washed-up country singer Bo Price, who's shocked to learn that five young soldiers from his Tennessee hometown have been killed in a training mishap. One of the victims was his younger brother, and another was the sibling of his former sweetheart, Angela Denton Kelly Preston, whom he abandoned 16 years earlier while she was pregnant with his child. Now an established TV reporter in Florida, Angela brings their daughter, Dixie Lindsay Haun, back to Tennessee for the funerals, running into Bo while both stay at the bed-and-breakfast operated by her parents Burt Reynolds and Tess Harper. It doesn't take a lot of brainpower to figure out what happens next; Cherie Bennett's script takes a predictable course, and Steven Goldman's direction, while certainly adequate, fails to arouse more than an average amount of interest in the proceedings. But the movie comes alive when Keith sings, which he does at regular intervals. Preston -- still a breathtakingly beautiful woman and an underrated actress -- props him up in the dramatic scenes, and Reynolds excels in his portrayal of her taciturn dad.
