Overview

The King certainly gets the royal treatment on MGM Home Entertainment's feature-packed DVD release of Phantasm director Don Coscarelli's quirky cult hit Bubba Ho-Tep. Lovingly detailing every aspect of production from Coscarelli's initial introduction to author Joe Lansdale's endearingly quirky short story to each jewel on Elvis' (Bruce Campbell) authentic wardrobe, this disc is a must-have for fans of the highly original, genre-splitting feature. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, the image is clean and sharp, offering accurate skin tones and an effective color balance that draws out every drab brown and pea-green nuance of the decrepit nursing home in which our heroes abide. Audio is offered in closed-captioned English Dolby Digital 5.1 with optional English, Spanish, and French subtitles. It's obvious that the filmmakers took great care in crafting a soundtrack that is rich in atmosphere -- in terms of both music and foley effect -- and this disc is a fantastic showcase for a film with such a lovingly detailed audio scheme. From the shuffling of the ominous scarab beetle to the unearthly sounds of Bubba himself (not to mention Brian Tyler's pitch-perfect score), this is a great disc to fire up the home theater for. As with the attention given to the presentation of the feature itself, MGM has gone above and beyond the call of duty in offering some truly alluring extra features. From the attention-getting slipcase packaging to the informative ten-page booklet featuring production art and photos, conceptual drawings, and a brief essay by star Campbell, it's obvious just picking the disc up that great care was put into its production. Extra features in the disc begin with a relaxed audio commentary track with Coscarelli and Campbell. Aside from sharing the kind of friendly rapport that immediately warms the viewer to the duo, both offer warm memories of the production, entertaining with amusing anecdotes while offering great insight into how such an unconventional film was made on such a limited budget. An Elvis commentary track (featuring Campbell in character as his onscreen alter ego) shows that a lot has changed in the world of cinema since the days of Clambake, and proves a special treat for fans of the good-humored Evil Dead star. The making-of featurette explores the film from Coscarelli's initial exposure to Lansdale's bizarre story to the director's final day of shooting in his own backyard, with interviews and stunt footage offering great insight into the production. "To Make a Mummy" offers a great look at how KNB made great use of such a limited budget, while "Fit for a King" offers an interview with costumer Butch Polston (whose B&K Enterprises holds original patterns for all of Elvis' jumpsuits), and "Rock Like an Egyptian" finds the director interviewing songwriter Tyler about the process of scoring a film. It's also fun to see Tyler turn the tables on Coscarelli on the subject of film music, with the director's response offering an honest and insightful answer concerning the remarkable impact of music on a film. A large stills gallery offers everything from makeup application photos to candid behind-the-scenes shots, with a theatrical trailer and television spot rounding out this fantastic package.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tony Nigro
It's a familiar question, usually asked at supermarket checkout counters: Suppose Elvis Presley is still alive? The producers of the horror-comedy Bubba Ho-Tep take it several steps further. Suppose he's in a dilapidated rest home in the middle of Texas? Suppose the residents start dying off at a mysteriously accelerated pace? And suppose Elvis endeavors to get to the bottom of things, with the help of a fellow codger who claims to be John Fitzgerald Kennedy? A cult concept like this one calls for a King beyond compare, and Bruce Campbell's just the ham for the job; portraying Elvis as a virtual invalid who gets a new lease on life when he and JFK Ossie Davis begin their paranormal investigation. Fun from start to finish, Bubba maintains its charm by never looking down upon its heroes, or even the other residents of the rest home. A great deal of the film's success relies on Campbell's performance. No stranger to cult movies -- he is, after all, Ash of Sam Raimi's Evil Dead series -- Campbell knows comedy; but he also deftly balances the shtick of playing Elvis with a genuine sympathy for the aged, tapping into a believable bitterness that works almost in spite of the story's goofy concept. Davis also plays it straight, making no attempt to mimic JFK, and while his role is played mostly as one long-running sight gag, he make a curiously natural sidekick for Elvis. The material could easily slip painfully into the realm of the overstretched film school joke, yet Don Coscarelli, director of such '80s genre touchstones as Phantasm and The Beastmaster, avoids the collegiate pitfalls. Ultimately, Bubba Ho-Tep is a showboat for the vastly underappreciated in the mainstream, anyway Campbell, and will no doubt rank high on any genre fan's list of movies that are just plain fun.
All Movie Guide - Jeremy Wheeler
From two of the great minds behind the Phantasm and Evil Dead series comes Bubba Ho-Tep, a refreshingly strange tale that'll put a smile on your face no matter your cult-film appreciation. Filled with incredible performances, highly quotable one-liners, and an undeniable humor that cuts through its offbeat mummy plot line, this is one of those magical films that genre fans and movie lovers alike should walk out of the theater hooting and hollering for. Headed by the almost unrecognizable B-film great Bruce Campbell, the film's elderly Elvis Presley is the new screen hero to beat all others, and he nails it perfectly. In no way offering just a sheer impersonation or on any level reducing the King to simply a cardboard cutout, Campbell crafts a character that not only looks and moves like the real thing, but is imbued with enough swaggering attitude and heart that you cannot help but buy into this wild incarnation of the rock & roll icon. (The 2003 HBO U.S. Comedy Arts Festival obviously agreed, granting Campbell Best Actor honors.) Key to the film as well is veteran Ossie Davis, going out on a limb in a role that shows off his impeccable comic timing and ends up being the most rewarding portrayal of the latter part of his career. Director Don Coscarelli, as well, not only does a bang-up job of adapting Joe R. Lansdale's quirky tale, but also with bringing back his stylistic eye to the screen in a way that's just as refreshing as the sincere performances he's wrangling in. An inevitable classic that will only grow in popularity through the years, Bubba Ho-Tep is a knockout of a good time and an independent kick in the pants to the formulaic Hollywood drivel that's pumped out year after year. Hail to the King, indeed!

    Horror Comedy at Its Best

In a genre of storytelling not known for its consistent success--mixing horror with comedy is a rare challenge--this film manages to work on all levels, starting with the heart. It's smart, funny, scarey, campy, weirdly sexy, and will keep you applauding to the end.

    Funny, Wacky Fantasy

Bruce Campbell (Army of Darkness) plays Sebastian Haff, an Elvis Presley imitator, who thinks he¿s Elvis Presley. Okay, maybe he is Elvis Presley, who switched places with Haff and then Haff kicked the bucket. Elvis has woken up in a convalescent home in Texas. Ossie Davis is John F. Kennedy. Yes, that¿s the assassinated president. THEY put sand in his brain and dyed his skin. You know who THEY are, don¿t you? At any rate, a mummy is killing off the sickly residents of the home. In a soliloquy Elvis nicknames the mummy Bubba Ho-tep. Elvis and Jack decide they must kill the evil mummy. BUBBA HO-TEP is a funny and quirky fantasy. Campbell and Davis are great as the dynamic duo and the Mummy looks a little Day-of-the-Deadish, the perfect mummy for Texas. If you love the offbeat and conspiracy theories, you¿ll love this movie. ¿ Leslie Strang Akers.

    Great Movie!

Bruce Cambell does it again. This movie is great, but avoid it if your to mainstream. Its a funny movie, but your not going to get it if you don't find really weird stuff funny. Like a mummy writing 'Cleopatra does the nasty' in a toilet stall.

    Campbell Hotep

Bruce Campbell is, as always, a riot. His aging, angry, bitter Elvis is spot on and completely believable. Perfect ending, another terrific notch in Bruce Campbell's vastly under rated acting career.

    MOJO storytelling

Great movie! Bruce Cambell is 'The King'. It was good to Ozzie Davis again. Lansdale fans rejoice. When's the next movie?

What happens when you write a little story.....

This outstanding, soon to be cult favorite, written by the most underrated writer in America JOE R. LANSDALE is a must see movie and powerful example of a 'little' story and some great acting and directing and a simple set up. Add some great music and this twisted story becomes something more than what you think. This movie shouldn't be taken so seriouly, those fans of Bruce Campbell, its not evil dead, same goes for the producer, its a classic Lansdale story all on its own and a must see. Great cast all around, funny, scarey, weird, its all there!

    Bubba in the house

This little gem is certainly multi-faceted; Bubba Ho-Tep has so many levels, it deserves at least a second viewing to gather it all in. It's Campbell's showcase, to be sure, but Ossie Davis' understated, tongue-in-cheek performance nailed this movie for me. Mostly true to the Lansdale story of the same name, my major objection would be in revealing Bubba too early in the film (this was not done in the story, and would've been a better choice for the movie as well.) I love the way Coscarelli pushed the ragged edge of poignancy, then smacked it in the face with some oddball humor. Coscarelli's screenplay recently won the Stoker Award, and rightfully so. I applaud the audacious risks taken by all involved in committing this terrific story to celluloid... or film... or digital. Wonderful movie.
