In order to succeed, he must first win the favor of the elitist Judge Smails Ted Knight, then the caddy golf tournament which the good judge sponsors. Of course, there are love interests as well -- one good, one naughty -- not to mention several foes he must vanquish along the way. The story itself serves to string along a series of slapstick scenes involving an obnoxious nouveau riche land developer Rodney Dangerfield who wants to turn the site into a condominium community; an oddball, Zen-quoting, millionaire slacker/golf ace Chevy Chase; and a psychotic groundskeeper Bill Murray with a gopher-fixation. Caddyshack was a bona fide hit; throughout the '80s and '90s, director Harold Ramis would continue to create such hits as Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, and Analyze This.

A free-wheeling, irreverent comedy featuring some of the screen's top funnymen, Caddyshack employed the same brand of cheerfully anarchic, low-brow humor that made Animal House a smash hit just two years earlier. In this 1980 romp, the members of a posh country club are terrorized by the arrival of Rodney Dangerfield, portraying a nouveau riche slob who cracks tasteless jokes about everything, including his own flatulence "Oooh! What, did somebody step on a duck?". Chevy Chase is appropriately droll as a wealthy idler who applies zen principles to his golf game, and Bill Murray engages in periodic scene-stealing as a goofy grounds-keeper beset with gopher problems. To balance all the oddball characterizations, sitcom regular Ted Knight is cast as one of the club's most dyspeptic members, and surprisingly, he makes for an admirable straight man. Director Harold Ramis Groundhog Day never allows the plot to intrude upon the zany antics of his gifted players, who keep Caddyshack moving at a giddy pace.

The frustrating difficulty of golf makes it the perfect sport to spoof in a movie...and there's no better one than Harold Ramis' 1980 comedy classic Caddyshack. Featuring a plethora of comic superstars, Caddyshack is a virtual cavalcade of gags that range from inspired to twisted to sublimely gross. The cast includes Ted Knight as Bushwood Country Club's anal-retentive owner, Rodney Dangerfield as a super-rich and super-obnoxious contractor, Chevy Chase as an excellent, but very quirky golfer, and Bill Murray as Bushwood's assistant greenskeeper and resident nut-job. In a film loaded with improvised gags and dialogue, it's the very scripted Dangerfield who steals every scene he's in with his trademark barbs laying into Knight's prim-and-proper Judge Smails with remorseless delight. The film's biggest undoing is its lack of a foundation in the script: it can't seem to figure out whether to focus on wry caddy Danny Noonan's (Michael O'Keefe) quest for a scholarship or to stay with its quartet of comedy superstars. Fortunately, while many gag scenes fail to progress the plot, they are genuine gutbusters: Knight launching his putter into a restaurant full of senior citizens, Dangerfield hitting a drive directly into Knight's groin ("I shoulda yelled two"), the "doody-in-the-pool" scene, or the splendid Fourth of July party that culminates in the Judge's nephew guzzling a drink spiked with a cigarette butt. Caddyshack is crude and may lack the finesse and ingenious story of a more notorious comedy classic such as Some Like It Hot, but it has garnered a strong cult fanbase who would certainly argue it as being one of the funniest films ever made.

    Caddy What?

    This game is about average for a board game. Devotees of the movie will appreciated the level of detail in some of the questions, while the more causal user may be somewhat annoyed. All in all we have played it twice, but don't find it particularly compelling. Considering the relatively high price, you would probably do better buying Clue of Monopoly if you were in the market for a new board game.

    Some Funny Moments

    While there were some funny moments, it wasn't Bill Murray's best flick. It didn't take long to get sick of seeing that gopher as well as Rodney Dangerfield's signature gyrations and twiches. But I did get a big kick out of Ted Knight. He played the perfect country club snob.

    Very Good!

    Caddyshack is a very good comedy movie about a group of golfers and caddies at a country club golf course and it is very funny. The whole cast is great but especially Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield, and Ted Knight!

    "Bark Like a Dog"

    What landed Jim Murray his stardom as the naughty greenskeeper. Rodney Dangerfield keeps the one liners coming as this classic comedy is unmatched.

    ''You're Playing Golf and You're going to like it''

    Simply the funniest movie ever made. If you have not seen the movie at least twice you are missing out on an amazing film. The clever wit and one liners of Chevy Chase, the over the top performance by Ted Night as Judge Smails, and utter ridiculousness of Bill Murray, every character in the movie delivers classic line after classic line. This might be the most quoteable movie ever made, and whether you like golf or not, it is still great. A must own in any DVD collection, whether you are a baby boomer who watched SNL during its creation, or a teenager who likes funny movies, what a stellar classic. I cannot say enough about this film.
