Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
A 12th-century Benedictine abbey is the moody setting for Cadfael Set IV, the fourth trio of adaptations of Ellis Peters's novels starring the great Shakespearean actor Sir Derek Jacobi as the resourceful monk/sleuth Brother Cadfael. While "Pilgrim of Hate" has Cadfael investigating the identity of a body carried into the abbey by one of a group of pilgrims who have come to honor its saintly relics, "The Potter's Field" has the monk doing the same with a body dug up in the abbey's potter's field. But more than just murder is at stake in "The Holy Thief," as Cadfael is thrust into the middle of a power struggle with another abbey for possession of the remains of a patron saint. Religious politics give this episode a particularly intriguing flavor, including a fascinating "Trial by Bible" that ultimately determines the fate of the holy bones, and some truly solid detection and deduction by our sleuth of the cloth. Indeed Cadfael's brand of forensic science is the fun of the whole series: He can't test for DNA, of course, or dust for fingerprints, but he can boil a corpse in a vat of vinegar for three days and then reassemble the bones. Jacobi couldn't be stronger as Cadfael: No stranger to period TV drama after his legendary work as star of the BBC miniseries I, Claudius, Jacobi seems to have found his true calling here, and is utterly convincing as a monk -- even the haircut suits him to a tee. The series as a whole ultimately triumphs through its medieval setting, a decidedly ambiguous moral universe in which Cadfael struggles to do good even where God's will seems cruel and arbitrary. The results are dark mysteries drenched in Gregorian chants and shrouded by clouds of incense through which, in the form of a little sharp detective work, the spirit of enlightenment just begins to shine through.
