Overview

Death comes in the form of a hooked monster in the Clive Barker based horror film Candyman. Presented in 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen, this transfer appears to be in excellent shape. The colors and black levels are all well saturated and very solid with flesh tones appearing accurately. Aside of the most minor of imperfections (including edge enhancement), this image is in great condition and should please moviegoers looking for old fashioned blood-'n-guts scares. Also included on this disc is a lackluster 1.33:1 pan and scan version of the film. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround in English and French. Unfortunately, the soundtrack for this film isn't quite as exciting as the video transfer -- the mix is generally constrained to only the front and rear speakers of a surround sound system. Otherwise, the track is free and clear of any excessive hiss or distortion. Also included on this disc are English and French subtitles. The extra features on Candyman are floating at the bare minimum -- all that's included on this DVD edition is a theatrical trailer for the film.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Cavett Binion
Haunting, intelligent and poetic, Candyman's strength lies in its ability to deliver a powerful social message primarily through imagery (Helen's realization that each room in her ritzy high-rise is the "mirror image" of its counterpart in Cabrini Green is a telling example), while managing to deliver the horror goods with hair-raising suspense, graphic shocks, and a chillingly seductive yet painfully human monster -- all qualities which affirm Candyman as the finest Barker adaptation ever committed to film -- far superior to its disappointing sequel Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh (1994).
