Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
What a surprisingly rewarding English-made American mobster saga. The period detail is excellent and belies the low budget; amazingly, Liverpool, England substitutes for 1920s Chicago very nicely, and the costumes, automobiles, and settings seem authentic enough. The mostly British cast is precisely constructed, with excellent Americanized performances throughout. Marc Warren possesses the steely defiance of a young Malcolm McDowell, and his intensity is matched by the reliable Al Sapienza, whose dangerously cutthroat mobster brings genuine menace to each scene. The few slower scenes successfully add dimension to the characters, particularly those involving Richard Roundtree's somewhat sad mentor to Jimmy. It's not The Godfather, but then, neither was The Godfather III."Want some action?" Jimmy asks Georgio when they first meet on a dark street, and with that fateful line begins a classic rise-and-fall gangster action-adventure that compares well to others of the genre. The two fiendishly clever title cards at the fadeout that explain the contents of Capone's safe are worth the price of rental alone.
