Overview

Graham Cutts and Austin Melford's 1935 musical comedy Car of Dreams (based on a German original), starring an almost absurdly young John Mills -- who sings here (and not badly, either) -- comes to DVD courtesy of Shanachie Entertainment in a surprisingly good-looking and even better-sounding edition. The film is issued under license from its British owner, Carlton Entertainment, a fact that sets it apart from most of the 1930s British titles that we see in this country (apart from those issued by the Criterion Collection and some other premium labels), which come from illicit sources and suffer from major deficiencies in quality. Not so this disc. Oh, there are some white speckles on the source print ahead of the credits and the image is a tiny bit soft, but there's still a lot of detail in the close-ups, and the transfer shows a good deal of care in balancing the brightness and contrast from shot to shot. There's a lot to love visually in this movie, with its focus at various points on cars and showrooms of the period, presenting elements of art-deco design. The audio is mastered at a high volume, which is another departure from what we've been accustomed with British movies of this period, even going back to the laserdisc era. The songs are on the silly side, but have a certain goofy charm, especially in the way they're presented here. The jacket claims a running time of 75 minutes, while Halliwell's Film Guide says that the movie runs 72 minutes; the actual running time on this disc is 68 minutes, but it's difficult to complain too loudly over something that is the next thing to a gift by virtue of its very existence as a U.S. release. The disc gets 12 chapters, which include references to song titles where relevant.
