Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Gregory Baird
The slightest sound can set off a deadly avalanche in Careful, another experimental gem from Canadian director Guy Maddin Tales of Gimli Hospital. Set in the fictional Alpine village of Toltzbad, where the inhabitants must live in virtual silence lest they find themselves buried under a mountain of snow, Careful tells the story of Zenaida Gosia Dobrowolska and her three sons, Johann Brent Neale, Grigorss Kyle McCulloch, and Franz Vince Rimmer, who are enmeshed in long-buried incestuous desires that gradually destroy their close-knit family. As is true of Maddin's previous films, Careful revels in retro ambience: It's shot entirely on artificially snowbound sets with expressionistic lighting and cinematography designed to evoke the early days of color films, and it has a soundtrack full of hisses and pops that add to the illusion of antiquity. Also typical are Careful's archaically poetic dialogue and its quirky use of symbolism. Maddin's masterful grasp of film styles pulls all of this together into a sly parody of German mountain films of the 1920s that has the powerful resonance of a warped fairy tale. The Kino DVD includes audio commentary by Maddin and screenwriter George Toles and a documentary about Maddin narrated by singer-songwriter Tom Waits.
