Carlito's WayDirector: Brian De Palma
Carlito's Way is a tale of a former hood trying to escape his former life. Al Pacino is Carlito Brigante, a high-level Puerto Rican drug dealer sprung from a three-decade jail sentence after only five years, thanks to a technicality and his sleazy, cocaine-addled lawyer, Dave Kleinfeld (Sean Penn). Carlito renounces his previous ways and takes a job as the manager of a club that Kleinfeld has invested in, planning to save enough money so that he can eventually move to the Caribbean. But no sooner is Carlito back on the streets of New York than his old life claws at him in the form of both old partners (Luis Guzman) and vicious up-and-comers (John Leguizamo). Nevertheless, Carlito stays clean and even restarts his relationship with a dancer named Gail (Penelope Ann Miller), until he is finally led astray by Kleinfeld, who manipulates Carlito into participating in the murder of a Mafia don from whom Kleinfeld has stolen a million dollars. At that point, the race is on to see whether Carlito and Gail can escape his world for good. The film is based on two novels about Carlito written by New York State judge Edwin Torres.

De palma is my favorable director due to this movie.I think this film was falsely underrated by critics. When I first saw this film I Thought it was to good to be true. SO I had to watch it 5-6 times more to convince myself I wasnt dreaming. There are realy some masterpiece action and suspense scenes (De palma's handcraft is best than ever) like the ones in the pool club or at the railway station. The tracks and the party atmosphere of the film make you really nostalgic about the'70 with the disco clubs mirror balls free sex, etc. The story line is great from the beginning (which starts like a real good film noir ...at the end). the dialogs and the slang expressions are funny and realy entertaining. the love story is beautiful and so is ann miler. The last scene in which the coloured poster becomes alive with the song ''you are so beautiful'' is a sheer classic.I can only say this was maybe the best film I've ever seen (and I've seen a lot).
When first watching it, I thought it was going to be another story about a stereotypical latino drug lord, but as I began to watch I learned that it wasn't so. I felt this movie was better than Scarface because 'Carlito' a.k.a. Charlie (Al Pacino) is an ex drug lord trying to change his ways. The movie begins when he gets out of jail and shows his struggles with keeping his life clean. I felt a sort of empathy with Charlie because the movie was filmed in my neighborhood of Spanish Harlem. If you are looking for a movie that has music, betreyal, honor, love, mobs, drugs, clubs, thugs and friendship i recommend this movie. If you are looking to watch a movie that has more depth than just an ignorant and senseless person selling drugs and killing out of control watch this movie.
De Palmas best picture ever! Pacinos at his best. A film I've watched over and over again. The sceens, the music, the acting. Penn is a wonderful surpporting actor. This is a must watch and must have movie. It's the reason we watch movies and enjoy them. Carlito's Way...is in the Top 5 movies of all time!
This is one of my favorite movies. It describes the story of an aging gangster trying to escape his past, but seemingly, no matter what he does he is forever connected to that world and can never quite leave it in the past.
I can never get tired of this movie. Al Pacino is an outstanding actor!
THIS STORY NOT ONLY TOOK US BACK TO A DEPALMA/ PACINO REUNION, BUT IT ALSO INVOLVED THE JOURNEY INTO THE WORLD OF A MAN WHO HAS BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT IN THE CRIMINAL SENSE, AND NOW WANTS TO LIVE A STRAIGHT LIFE. THE TEMPTATIONS OF THE STREETS ARE CONSTANT AND HIS CLOSEST FRIEND IS ALSO A CARELESS WRECK OF A LAWYER( WONT SAY IF YA HAVENT SEEN) BUT LOVE SEAN PENN AND THE GREAT ALFRED PACINO FOR DELIVERING A STORY IN WHICH I LOVE......AND BY THE WAY GOTTA LOVE JOHN LEGUIZAMO IN A UP N COMING ROLE......
