A mysterious jewel thief, a lost treasure, and the last Russian royal family are just a few of the elements that make up the winding plot of "The Last Wizard of the Century." Fans of "Case Closed" (aka "Detective Conan") and/or Kaito Kid will enjoy seeing the two characters in action against each other. Although the graphics are little old (there are obvious CGI moments when the title of the movie is introduced) due to rapid advances in technology, the animation is well done and the music suspenseful. It's very nice that they include the original Japanese sound for those of us who prefer the original, but the English acting is fairly good if you prefer/watch it in that version first.
I'm not a big anime fan, but since starting the anime club at my library, I've been exposed to a lot more anime than I ever thought I'd watch. And while a few shows have been difficult to sit through, I've been pleasantly surprised by how much I've liked some of it. Case Closed: The Last Wizard of the Century definitely falls into the latter category. The show's premise---a grown-up detective mysteriously transformed into a child but still continuing to solve crimes---is a little odd, but the movie's mystery is intriguing. There are enough false leads to keep you guessing, and since several of the characters are bent on uncovering, or hiding, one another's secrets, there's always a satisfying revelation waiting in the wings.
