Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Reminiscent of Fame and Flashdance but unfolding in a more rarefied atmosphere, Center Stage trots out old cinematic platitudes regarding ambition, dedication, and self-realization -- but does so in a lively, engaging, thoroughly contemporary manner. Befitting its setting in the highly competitive world of ballet, Stage utilizes the talents of professional dancers who happen to be charismatic screen performers as well. San Francisco Ballet regular Amanda Schull stars as the talented but naive student who fears she won't meet the exacting standards required by the exclusive ballet school run by Peter Gallagher. The New York Ballet's Ethan Stiefel plays an up-and-coming choreographer and erstwhile ladykiller with a love-'em-and-leave-'em attitude. Also making powerful impressions are supporting players Susan May Pratt as a snobbish, bulimic student, Debra Monk her overbearing mother, and Donna Murphy a demanding teacher. Director Nicholas Hytner The Crucible lets the clichés fall where they may while lavishing attention on the dance numbers, including a climactic extravaganza combining ballet and modern dance. He explains his choices in a commentary for the DVD, which also includes deleted scenes, extended dance sequences, a making-of featurette, a music video, an isolated music score, and theatrical trailers.
All Movie Guide
What's fun, filled with buff bodies, and totally hardcore? Why, ballet, of course. This undeniably formulaic teen movie brings the competitive world of professional dance to center stage. While the ups and downs of ballet-school life (eating disorders, overbearing mothers, "bad feet") are portrayed with all the depth of an after school special, the en pointe posse gives the audience a surprisingly heartwarming sense of the bonds formed between fellow dancers. It's not that the acting is particularly good -- it isn't -- but it's the love of the craft that makes this movie charming. Perhaps it's due to the fact that the actors are largely professional ballerinas themselves (Amanda Schull, who plays Jody Sawyer, is an apprentice at the San Francisco Ballet; Ethan Stiefel, Cooper Nielson in the film, is famous in his own right within the American Ballet Theater). Dance fans and those with a soft spot for unlikely triumphs will cheer Jody in her end-of-term performance in the tradition of Flashdance and Fame.

    A Great Dancing Movie

I've seen a lot of dancing movies, the reason this is my favorite is because I've been in tap for 9 years, jazz for about 6,and ballet for 3 years, these movies portrait great ballet and jazz shows, as well as the hardships of a dancers life and of any persons life, this is a great movie.

    The best!

Center stage is one of the best movies around, especially if you love dancing. I dance Jazz, but I used to dance ballet when I was younger and one of my friends just started pointe. It's also just a good love story but come the dance is one of the best parts!

Center Stage is a Great Movie

When I first saw the previews of Center Stage I thought it would be a joke! I thought that a movie about ballet would be extremely boring, but now I have to say that Center Stage is one of my favorite movies. Any athlete can appreciate the hard work and dedication that the dancers in this movie have. They are passionate and have high goals for themselves. The dance numbers are to die for, and the story line is great. I would recommend this movie to everyone- and it is a great date movie.

    Watched a MILLION times!!!

Finally a movie for serious dancers which is almost completely accurate. Sascha R. Ethan S. and (of course) Julie Kent all show their talent of being principles at ABT (in real life). This makes for the thrill of being at the Met,seeing a ballet, but with a plot and character transformation which makes for an all around fabulous film!! Hard to put into words, go watch it...and if you have, go watch it AGAIN!!!

    It Was Awesome!

I personally loved this movie, where ever you were, even if you were in the theater, it gave you a feeling, that you just want to dance! I loved this movie, and it totally deserved the 5 stars.

    Very inspiring

I loved Center Stage! It gave you the feeling to get up and dance what ever you are doing. I am a dancer and loved it. It gives you the perspective on what it is like to be a dancer and you can always follow you dreams if you put you mind to it and are patient.
