Overview

Hit the way-back machine and strap yourself in, because it's time once again for the immortal challenge between the Super Friends and those pesky arch-villains, the Legion of Doom, with the Challenge of the Super Friends: United They Stand DVD. Packed with four fun-filled episodes, this disc is presented in it's original full-frame image, which looks vibrant and sharp, but still thankfully chock-full of the cel animation goofs it's renowned for (a definite plus when it comes to this show), while the audio is presented in a single Dolby Digital Mono track. Extras include introductions by story editor Jeffrey Scott, which are quite brilliant, as the man talks in complete straight-face about the motivations of the characters, though funnily enough, he makes no mention of the nonsensical plots which drive each episode into hilarity (albeit perfect for the kiddies). Other bonuses come with the Hall of Justice feature, which provides each hero with a profile and neat music video featuring highlights from their run on the show. There's also a shoddy trivia game, though it's really nothing more than filler in the disc. Still, along with the Challenge of the Super Friends: Attack of the Legion of Doom disc, these releases are well worth it for kids and nostalgia-addicts alike.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
A retro blast from the past, Challenge of the Super Friends pits the Justice League (Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Hawkman, Black Vulcan, Samurai, and Apache Chief) against the Legion of Doom, comprising 13 diabolically sinister villains, including Superman's nemesis, Lex Luthor. This collection contains four episodes from this fondly remembered 1978 series, which is more kid-oriented than the relatively sophisticated Justice League. The most compelling is "Secret Origins of the Superfriends," in which Luthor utilizes a time machine to alter the pasts of Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and Superman. In "Trial of the Super Friends," courage and intelligence prevail when Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern battle empowered android duplicates. This disc also contains "Monolith of Evil" and "The Giants of Doom" from the series, which only ran for 16 episodes, all presented in chronological order as they aired on ABC.
