Champions Forever: World Heavyweight Champions

( 1 )

Overview

Champions Forever is filmmaker Dimitri Logothetis' bouquet to past boxing greats. Adopting a "then and now" approach, Logothetis alternates clips of these fighters in their prime with recently filmed interviews. The five boxers spotlighted herein are Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Ken Norton, Larry Holmes, and George Foreman--whose "prime," it would later turn out, hadn't quite passed yet.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Pete Segall
It almost seems hard to imagine, in an age when boxing and boxers are even more hard-pressed for credibility than pro wrestlers, that "heavyweight champion of the world" was perhaps the most honored title in sport. Champions Forever recalls those not-so-long-ago days -- the '70s -- and celebrates the five champs who defined the era: George Foreman, Larry Holmes, Smokin' Joe Frazier, Ken Norton Sr., and, of course, Muhammad Ali. The program documents the fights that brought each champ to glory with historic footage, but the high points come mainly during their fights amongst each other -- Ali-Frazier's "Thrilla in Manilla," Ali-Foreman's "Rumble in the Jungle," and the titanic confrontations between Holmes and Foreman. Interspersed in the fight footage are interviews with each of the combatants, and they are uniformly candid about whom each of them thought they could and could not beat. To wash this pugilstic feast down, the disc includes a special "Dinner with the Champs," featuring the highlighted boxers gathering for a meal hosted by, oddly enough, Reggie Jackson. What each boxer lacks in eloquence he makes up for in spirit, and it's inspiring to see Ali, slowed by Parkinson's disease, up and ready to go 15 rounds with any of his fellow fighters who disrespect him.
