Del Torre invited Charles Bukowski, the poet and novelist well known for his gritty celebrations of alcohol, women and gambling, to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada for a reading; the event found Bukowski speaking to a well-oiled and vocal crowd of 650 fans, who verbally sparred with the author throughout the ninety-minute reading. Del Torre videotaped the event, and after being lost in the Bukowski archive for decades, it was rediscovered by filmmaker John Dullaghan while he was...

Overview

In the fall of 1979, Dennis B. Del Torre videotaped the event, and after being lost in the Bukowski archive for decades, it was rediscovered by filmmaker John Dullaghan while he was making his documentary Bukowski: Born Into This, and now the Vancouver performance has been released on DVD by Monday Media. Charles Bukowski: There's Gonna Be A God Damn Riot In Here! has been transferred to disc in its original full-frame aspect ratio of 1.33:1, and while the image quality is hardly pristine -- this was a single-camera shoot using consumer-grade equipment, and the tape shows periodic signs of wear -- it captures the chaotic atmosphere of the reading quite well, and the rarity of filmed performances by Bukowski compensates for these flaws. The audio has been mastered in Dolby Digital Stereo from a monophonic source, and while the fidelity is not perfect, the author and the hecklers are clearly audible throughout. The reading is in English, with no subtitles or language options included. As a bonus, this disc includes a short text biography of the author and a brief documentary on a 2004 screening of the video in Vancouver, with a number of fans that attended the original reading sharing their memories about the event. Within a year of this appearance, Bukowski would stop giving public readings, so Charles Bukowski: There's Gonna Be A God Damn Riot In Here! is invaluable for fans of his work and those interested in his sometimes combative relationship with his audience.
