Overview

Charlie Chaplin was one of the best loved comic actors in the history of motion pictures, but he was also one of the medium's first true auteurs. Chaplin wrote and directed most of his best-known films, composed the musical scores, and was actively involved in every aspect of their production. Chaplin was also that rare comedian who understood that film could tap many human emotions other than laughter, and his best films display a rare pathos and an eagerness to approach themes far more complex than can be expressed in a simple pratfall. This box-set features three of Chaplin's best silent features: The Gold Rush, in which the Little Tramp heads to Alaska in search of fortune; City Lights, with Chaplin trying to raise enough money for an operation that will restore sight to a beautiful but blind flower girl (Virginia Cherrill); and Modern Times, a satire of the mechanized age in which the Tramp tries to hold on to a job while winning the heart of a beautiful girl (Paulette Goddard). In addition, this set also features Chaplin's first talkie, The Great Dictator, in which Charlie plays two roles -- Adenoid Hynkel, tyrannical leader of the nation of Tomania, and a humble Jewish barber who bears a certain resemblance to the fascist ruler.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Charlie Chaplin was more than the funniest silent filmmaker of all times, he was one of the most important artists of the twentieth century. Combining musical hall slapstick, social realism, a poet's eye for human behaviour, and a dancer's eye for body language, Chaplin created a new kind of comedy that could make you laugh and cry in the same moment. These four films, his major silent full-lengthers -- City Lights, The Gold Rush, The Great Dictator, and Modern Times -- are simply four of the most moving movies you'll see.
