Overview

The Superbit version Charlie's Angels and the unrated edition of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle come together for this widescreen special-edition DVD two-pack from Columbia TriStar. Each disc comes with a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround soundtrack in English with optional subtitles in English, French, and Korean. There are an insane amount of extra features on each disc. Disc one contains featurettes about the set design, fashion, martial arts, stunts, special effects, and director. Also included are deleted and extended scenes, "Wired Angels" scene deconstruction, outtakes, sneak peeks, and DVD-ROM content. There are also music videos from Destiny's Child and Apollo 440. Disc two contains the unrated widescreen special edition of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Screenwriters John August, Cormac Wibberley, and Marianne Wibberley provide a regular commentary track. Director McG provides Telestrator commentary, where he writes on the screen à la Monday Night Football. Yet another track is dubbed the "Angel-Vision Trivia Track," featuring pop-up links. There are a total of eight featurettes. Exclusive to the unrated version, "Turning Angels Into Pussycat Dolls" is a profile of choreographer Robin Antin's so-named dance troupe. "Rolling With the Punches" explores the training and choreography of the many fight scenes. "Learn Why There's No Such Thing as a Short Shot, Only an Overworked Producer" is about making the opening montage. "XXX-Treme Angels" focuses on the Moto-Cross segment. The other featurettes are more self-explanatory."The Cars of Charlie's Angels" is about the cars,"Costuming an Angel" is about the costumes, and "Designing Angels" is about the production design. In the music area, there's a jukebox that offers a short music clip of the soundtrack songs with commentary by McG and music supervisor John Houlihan. There's also a music video for "Feel Good Time" featuring Pink and William Orbit. More extra features include a guide to celebrity cameos and DVD-ROM links to exclusive online stuff, like the video game and the animated shorts. This two-disc set goes above and beyond what is necessary for this film.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Adapted from one of the Swingin’ '70s’ most popular TV series, Charlie’s Angels is a funny, fast-paced romp brimming with feminine pulchritude and bursting with explosive action. Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, and Lucy Liu portray the sexy sleuths whose unseen employer voiced, as he was in the TV show, by John Forsythe assigns them to protect software guru Sam Rockwell from mysterious assailants. The high-stakes game takes an unexpected turn when the bodacious bodyguards discover that Charlie himself is the ultimate prize. Although Diaz, Barrymore, and Liu are easily capable of carrying the film on their shapely shoulders, a terrific supporting cast just adds to the fun. Bill Murray puts his signature stamp on the role of John Bosley David Doyle in the TV original, the Angels' fellow operative. Tim Curry, Crispin Glover, Kelly Lynch, Luke Wilson, Matt LeBlanc, and Barrymore’s real-life boyfriend, Tom Green, also make the most of their screen time. Music-video director McG a.k.a. Joseph McGinty Nichol makes a flashy feature-film debut, combining Hong Kong-style fight choreography and Matrix-like special effects with loose, improvisational humor and frequent pop culture references. As a result, his high-flying Angels makes heavenly entertainment. McG explains his filmmaking technique in a commentary for the DVD, which also includes music videos from Destiny’s Child and Apollo Four Forty, the theatrical trailer, and featurettes documenting the film’s production.
Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Our favorite crime-fighting cuties are back for another feature-film go-round, and fans of the first film will not be disappointed: The ladies are just as lovely and lethal as ever. Full Throttle reintroduces us to Natalie Cameron Diaz, Dylan Drew Barrymore, and Alex Lucy Liu, who remain in the employ of the enigmatic Charlie Townsend John Forsythe, as always, voice alone -- this time, investigating the theft of a witness-relocation database much sought after by rival mobsters. Demi Moore, returning to the screen after a three-year break, portrays a former Angel who has gone over to the dark side. Bernie Mac rather improbably but satisfactorily replaces Bill Murray as Bosley; Justin Theroux is a particularly nasty heavy; and returning cast members Matt LeBlanc, Luke Wilson, and Crispin Glover the silver screen's undisputed king of creepy make the most of their limited screen time. Once again, director "McG" is at the megaphone, fashioning stylish if physically impossible action sequences and loading each sequence with pop-culture references. The story is almost nonexistent, with scenes included seemingly to provide song cues for the succession of pop oldies that comprise the soundtrack. But let's face it, nobody watches a Charlie's Angels movie for the plot. The requisite pulchritude is more than amply supplied, and McG sustains a rapid pace that makes it easy to overlook the narrative's absurdities. Full Throttle, like its predecessor, provides two hours of mindless fun that calls for a healthy suspension of disbelief and buckets of hot, buttery popcorn.
