Chasing Papi

Overview

Granted, it never received a wide theatrical release, but Chasing Papi comes to DVD with a superb presentation. This two-sided disc includes both a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer and a full-frame alternative. The picture is exceptional in every way. Overview

Granted, it never received a wide theatrical release, but Chasing Papi comes to DVD with a superb presentation. This two-sided disc includes both a 1.85:1 anamorphic transfer and a full-frame alternative. The picture is exceptional in every way. Colors, an integral part of the film, are exciting and perfectly realized; skin tones are equally impressive and realistic. This DVD transfer really has a theatrical feel. In an unexpected move, the 5.1 English Dolby Digital track has a decent amount of life. Yes, as with most smaller romantic comedies, this one is centered up front, but there is also a generous amount of surround sound, creating a wider field than expected. The dialogue is also clear and crisp throughout. What isn't so exciting is the decision at Fox to split the supplements up over the two sides. A commentary track from director Linda Mendoza, director of photography Xavier Perez Grobet, and stars Eduardo Verástegui, Sofía Vergara, and Roselyn Sanchez is provided on either side of the disc. As with the movie, it's excessively lightweight, but enjoyable, although it quickly becomes annoying when all the participants alternate between English and Spanish. The other extra available on the widescreen side is a 20-minute featurette that is obviously studio fluff, but pleasant enough to watch. The full-frame side contains a brief segment of bloopers and outtakes (none of which are overly interesting), a lackluster music video from Huey Dunbar featuring Fat Joe, a music promotional spot, and the theatrical trailer. While the supplements don't add up to much, the overall package is rather appealing, even if the film itself lacks much substance.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Featherweight and certainly more than a little annoying, Chasing Papi nonetheless fares better than anticipated, given the shrill episodes featured in the trailers. At certain moments, its pastel production design mimics guilty pleasures like Bring It On and Charlie's Angels, effectively enough that it's almost tempting to label Chasing Papi its own guilty pleasure. Almost. The Charlie's Angels associations come from grouping together three disparate female types -- the buxom babe, the intellectual career woman, and the princess -- and sending them through a series of set pieces and other pratfalls that exploit their archetypal traits in a way that's more fun than insulting. What's not so fab is that the women initially remain devoted to their philandering boyfriend (Eduardo Verastegui), catfighting for a prize that should have lost its luster, and teaming up to protect him, rather than kicking him to the curb. That spares us the distaff revenge fantasy promised in the trailers, but it requires the women to continue desperately hoping he'll choose them, when they should be seizing their untapped feminism long before the coda. Then again, it's hard to take revenge on a guy who spends much of the movie unconscious on tranquilizers. While this tends to negate the "chasing" aspect of the title, it was undoubtedly a smart decision, given Verastegui's limited acting chops. Roselyn Sanchez, Sofía Vergara, and Jaci Velasquez show more energetic talents, and their sense of fun is contagious, almost in spite of the audience's better judgment. Six Feet Under's Freddy Rodriguez also turns in a comically unintelligible performance as a hoodlum with a toothache.

    Fun-ny

And insightful. Reminds me of one of those Peter Sellers movies. Me and My brother watched this one evening and we enjoyed every bit of it. More Ms.Mendoza please. Kudos to Mr. Whitaker and Shelia E.
