Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
The major change in the 22-episode second season at the place "where everybody knows your name" is that bar owner Sam "Mayday" Malone (Ted Danson) and waitress Diane Chambers (Shelley Long) have moved from Season 1's tantalizing mating ritual into an actual relationship -- one of prime-time TV's most explosively hilarious, of course. John Ratzenberger's know-it-all postman, Cliff Clavin Jr., becomes a bona fide cast member (credited in the opening) in this second season (1983-84), which also finds unemployed accountant Norm Peterson (George Wendt) on the outs with his wife, Vera. This is also the last complete season for fan favorite Coach (Nicholas Colasanto), who shines in one of the series' all-time best episodes, "Fortune and Men's Weight." The episode involves Coach's purchase of an antique scale that makes uncannily accurate predictions about the people who step onto it. The pinnacle of this knockout second year -- a run that earned the Emmy Award for Best Comedy in 1984 -- is "Old Flames." Here, Fred Dryer shows up as Sam's old friend Dave, who bets that he can bust up Sam's relationship with Diane and seems to hit pay dirt when he informs Ms. Chambers that Mayday hasn't jettisoned his little black book.
