A half-hour interview by author Nelson George sees Rock in a candid, humble mood. Rock's thoughts on the importance of Bring the Pain to his career are fascinating. A South Park-like animated short provides a couple of laughs. Two champagne-themed music videos complete the package: the gut-busing "No Sex" and the rap-video spoofing "Champagne."

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
At the time of filming Bring the Pain, Chris Rock's first HBO comedy special, Rock was a comedian whose moment had seemingly passed. Best known for his residency at Saturday Night Live and a failed attempt to headline a movie, the mediocre CB4: The Movie, Rock saw the special as his one last shot at reigniting a stalled career. With its salty language, his brilliant delivery and a few controversial bits, Bring the Pain did just that, instantly launching Rock into the top ranks of young comedians. The classic comedy albums that flit across the screen at the start of the show hints at Rock's serious approach to comedy. That seriousness permeates a set that is delivered with an almost evangelical urgency, with Rock's high-pitched delivery and restless pacing giving the material a lift. From its opening riffs on Marion Barry (which draws a faintly heard boo from the Washington, D.C. audience) to Rock's infamous commentary on the culture war in black America, Bring the Pain is funny, trenchant and, at times, scandalous. Since then, Rock has moved on to greener pastures, but in interviews, he has always maintained that he remains a stand-up comic at heart. Bring the Pain stands as the definitive record of Rock in his element and at his best.
