Overview

As hosted by actor Danny Glover (To Sleep with Anger), the documentary series Civil War Journal travels beyond the surface-level iconography and rudimentary factual knowledge of the U.S. Civil War (1861-65) that many possess, to provide more intimate insights and put human faces on the said conflict. This particular box set contains four biographically-themed episodes of the program, each of which paints a unique and distinguished portrait of a Civil War Giant. The collection begins with West Point Classmates-Civil War Enemies, about the pairs of men who attended West Point military academy as the best of friends, and then found themselves on opposite sides of the bloody struggle. Also included are: Robert E. Lee, a profile of the greatest military commander that the Civil War witnessed; Stonewall Jackson, a study of the titular Confederacy leader who stood "like a stone wall" against Union forces, and sustained a reputation of invincibility; and Sherman and the March to the Sea, which details Union General William Tecumseh Sherman's attempt to break the will of the Confederacy by obliterating much of the deep south, in November 1864.
